Heidelberg shops closed on sunday? Other option for day trip from Mainz-help asap

Are most shops in Heidelberg closed on Sunday? We were going to H today. Other option for Sunday day trip? FYI trains do not run past binges, as rain has caused rock slides. Bingen was a ghost town yesterday. We were planning KD Rhine boat today, but are going on Monday, as we fear many shop and restaurants plus tourist places and castle might be closed or hard to access, given the situation.
So, if H shops are closed, any other options for our family for a day trip via rail for Sunday?

Stores in Germany are always closed on Sundays, except for those selling souvenir items. The main street in Heidelberg has lots of these kind of stores, so they may well be open. Why would you want to shop though when there are tourist attractions and museums to visit? The castle, the apotheke museum, the student prison, the churches?

Museums in Germany are usually closed on Mondays with some exceptions, but tourist attractions are usually always open.

Have you considered a visit to Frankfurt? Close to Mainz, the fest at the Alte Oper is happening, you have about 2 dozen museums you could visit, plus the Palmengarten and there is a great antique market today at the Konstablerwache. Trains from Mainz have a stop here.

Eltville is a good town on the Rhein that should have train or bus access from Wiesbaden, plus you can get the ship from here instead of from Bingen or Rüdesheim.

Thank you. We went to Heidelberg and spent a beautiful day in the old quarter and castle. Plenty of nice cafes, etc. open. Glad we made the trip.
