Heidelberg/Mannheim/Ladenburg Public Transportation

First time taking public transit in Germany and don't know what type of tickets I should be looking at. Want to find the one relevant to us and cost-effective. Will be a group of 2 traveling.

Staying at Heidelberg
- 2 days might need local bus
- other days mainly walking

During our stay at Heidelberg, we are planning to do 2 day trips.

  1. Mannheim
    • using Tram to go between Heidelberg <-> Mannheim
    • most likely will be walking while in Mannheim
  2. Ladenburg
    • using RB 68 to go between Heidelberg <-> Ladenburg
    • most likely will be walking too while in Ladenburg

I was researching, but still unsure what is the right ticket for us and where to buy.

Thought it will be:

  • single roundtrip for Mannheim
  • day ticket (family) for Ladenburg but then I saw the regional
  • Baden-Württemberg-Ticket now, which i'm not sure if it's worth it
  • we are open to any other ticket type suggestion

Any help will be appreciated!

How do you plan to get to Heidelberg (and from where) in hte first place? And what about your departure from the area?

The subscription-based Deutschland-Ticket is valid for one month at €58 per person. It provides unlimited travel on everything - trams, buses, regional trains, etc. (except the long-distance high-speed trains) and would be appropriate for the trips you mention.

@Russ
I already booked ICE to and from Airport.
Will be staying at Heidelberg for 8 days/7 nights.
Heidelberg - will be walking focus so I'm not too worried of the public transit there.
I'm just concerned about the 2 day trips I'm planning to visit.

Both these trips are in the VRN transit district, so they are just local transit tickets, probably a day pass.

Mannheim outing... VRN Tagesticket Familie, €25.50, covers 2 adults for unlimited travel within the entire VRN network for 1 day. If bought on Saturday, valid thru Sunday as well. Tickets bought at VRN ticket machines should be validated prior to boarding

Ladenburg: Same ticket name but valid just for your RB 68 route round trip at the reduced price of €14.70/2 due to the shorter distance.
