Thanks to all for answering my prior questions about exploring this area. I've finally settled on spending two nights in Heidelberg, coming by train from Berlin (late afternoon arrival), renting a car for one full day to explore family heritage locations (overnight back in Heidelberg), and then the next day taking the train to the Mittelrhein. Looking for suggestions for a modest but comfortable hotel near the train station or somewhere within comfortable walking distance. There is no Google street view for Heidelberg so my usual process to check out neighborhoods has been thwarted. Ideas much appreciated, thanks.
We stayed at the Hotel Goldene Rose a couple of years ago. Very nice, smallish rooms. Good hearty breakfast and modest cost. I think we paid 115 Euros per night for a room for two. http://www.hotel-goldene-rose.de/index.php/en/
You can walk from the train station. It's right in the middle of the pedestrian zone and it has parking.
Please, don't stay near the train station. It's one of the least attractive quarters in a very attractive town.
Stay in the Altstadt. I lived just up the road from Heidelberg for several years, so I don't really know any of the hotels, except Hotel Holländer Hof, where I stayed for one night before moving to the region. It wasn't terribly expensive and the room was surprisingly large. There's no on-site parking, but the hotel gives you a pass to a nearby garage.
We will be spending 2 nites in Heidelberg in May- have reservation for Hollander Hof- booked it on their website for
129 E/nite includes bkft.
We were in Heidelberg end of Sept. for 3 nights. Stayed at Ibis by train station. No complaints......hotel comfortable and clean, a 2 minutes walk from station. Area safe. Plenty of places for breakfast if you opt out of having it at the Ibis.
