Having trouble making a reservation to visit the Reichstag Dome

We're going to be in Berlin September 3rd to 6th and we're hoping to be able to visit the Reichstag dome during one of our full sight seeing days (September 4th or 5th). I've booking a reservation at www.bundestag.de but the system isn't letting me. For all of this week and next, I get an error message:

The type of visit you specified is not available in this week.

The first date it will allow me to book is September 11th. The wording is a bit ambiguous -- are spots not available because they are fully booked up or because they're not allowing reservations for some other reason on those days? Rick's Germany book says "spots often book up several days in advance", which gives the impression that booking 10 days in advance shouldn't be a problem. Having the next 15 days booked up would be surprising.

We definitely prefer visiting the dome without a guided tour (our 3 children would probably not do well during the tour), but to see if there's more availability for tours, I tried changing our visit type to "Guided tour followed by a visit to the dome"...but the site gives me the same error message for the next 6 weeks. The next available date for a tour is October 5th.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how we can visit the dome during our two days there?

Thanks!
Myron

When I tried to book a 'dome visit only' (just to see the dates) the first available date was Sep 11 at 9:45 pm. Your preferred dates seem to be already booked. The annual 'Open House' is taking place on Sun, Sep 06 - probably masses of people will show up.
For visitors without reservation, there's a kiosk across the visitors' centre from the Reichtag entrance to line up for same-day tickets (if available). I don't know how long the line-up/wait time would be.
