Has anyone passed A3 within Spessart Mountain area?

Hi,

has anyone recently passed A3 within Spessart mountain between Aschaffenburg and Wurzburg? it's undergoing a massive restructuring. I just wonder how badly the traffic affected there?

I plan to head to Wurzburg from Boppard on 17th of July starting around 8am. Should the traffic be better in the morning or I'd rather avoid this point and look for another alternative route?

cheers

Hi Jeff,

thanks for reminding me in regards to the morning commuter traffic. I totally forgot about that! I just think if we start at 10am, it might be too late reaching Wurzburg as we are going to continue to Bamberg later on.

My hubby won't be pleased going at 5.30 am, even 8am is a negotiation time with him.

How long would you think it take from Boppard to Wurzburg if we drive from 8am? According to gmap, without traffic is 2hrs 15mnts but w/ traffic it'd be 2hrs 43mnts. Is this pretty accurate?

Cheers

It's going on a year since I last drove that stretch, but I doubt they've finished. It looks like they're completely revamping the layout of the road.

Now that being said, in the several experiences I had driving through, traffic was mostly moving. Not fast, but not crawling either. The X-factor, though, is an accident or breakdown, which or course, are not predictable. If these occur in a construction zone, it can grind traffic to a halt ("Stau" in German) because there's no shoulder. Fortunately, I was never caught in this circumstance on the section of A3 that we're talking about, but I have in other parts of Germany.

Jeff gave some good suggestions, but I would also add that A61 can be rather Stau-prone as well.

Hi,
I believe we will be taking the A3 in the other direction (from Frankfurt to Schlangenbad and on to Bacharach from Frankfurt airport). After that we will be driving and visiting Alsace and Bavaria. How do you find info on road conditions and construction? We are heading over the end of August. Thanks for any insight... Kathy

Hi All, thanks for the input

A61 has roadworks too from what I see from Gmap?? Also if I took A61 then A81. would the time reaching Wurzburg take much longer? I input the destination one by one to Heilbronn first then to Wurzburg as I don't know how to input alternative route than one pointed already by gmap :D. the result would take almost 3hrs just to Heilbronn and another hour to Wurzburg, it looks like a longer detour.

Hi Kathy,
on gmap there's a roadwork sign in triangle on the route chosen. it means there's a construction on that points. so far, i found it pretty accurate compared to the info shared by the members here too. it's been in repair for quite some time according to the members here so I'd think in August, it'd still be in the same condition

Hi Jeff
thanks for the websites. we're going to really need that especially on spot

cheers

Welcome to the world of autobahn driving.

I think it is as bad this year as it has been in previous years, maybe worse.

I'm just completing a circuit around southeastern Germany, Belgium to Wuppertal (yay, what a hoot!! - everybody should have a go on the Schwebebahn) to east of Frankfurt to the Mittelrhein to Wurzburg to the Romantic road to Augsburg to Munich to Luxembourg via Stuttgart.

I've put in a fair few clicks on the old odometer.

Consistently, all along the German parts of the route, it is very short bursts of 150 kph followed almost immediately by several km at 80 or 60 kph through the construction (watch out for the radar cameras) before another quick burst.

Don't count on google maps - they can be optimistic.

Just go with the flow.

Coming off the Mittelrhein towards the Frankfurt conurbation expect delays. The route through Ruedesheim is very slow, and the route across the Main into Mainz is very slow because it is very narrow - you have to go through a narrow and low gauge tester that whacked one wing mirror the other day before you get on the bridge. It is restricted to only cars and small vans that can get through the tester. Otherwise you are going many km out of your way, with all the heavy vehicles.
