Has anyone done a mud flat hike in Northern Germany?

Doing a mudflat hike in the Cuxhaven area (near Bremen) looks like it would be fun! Has anyone done one? If you did, did you go barefoot or did you take some Wellies with you? If not, do you know if there are places you can buy them there? After the tour, is there a place to was the mud off of you? Any insight is welcome :)

Hi,

I have not been to Cuxhaven, can't help with your questions. It's on for this trip. The ferry to Harwich, England used to leave from there, ie, the sea connection between Germany and England. Bremen I visited twice in 1971 and 1992. . The two cities are not that close to each other, takes 1.5 hrs by train. Anyway, I know what you mean in pinpointing Cuxhaven.

We did it from Neßmersiel, it was a great experience. Don't go barefoot, your feet will get cut on the shells in the mud. Everyone was wearing some type of shoe. We bought water shoes from one of the local shops. We went in September and it was a little late in the season, they were hard to find (all sold out), but eventually we did. The mud is very thick so you want good fitting shoes so your foot/shoe doesn't get stuck in the mud and your foot pops out :-).

It was tough going in the beginning, I went with my 70ish parents and my mom had a hard time. Her foot would sink into the mud and she found it difficult to pull her foot out. But the mud firmed up the further out we went and it got easier.

yes. I went in a horse drawn wagon with my family back and forth. I don't think walking would be much more fun. you may want to considering wearing your oldest sneakers to protest your feet and laundering them afterward. don't do this if you have sore feet you may twist an ankle. if you are fat you may sink far down into the muds mid call or so and it's scary and hard to walk. and
