Hanover, stuff to do there

I’ll be in Hanover for a few days in early July, What’s to see and do there? Where to eat? Thanks.

Hi,

If you're into history, especially Prussian history, I would suggest going to the Herrenhäuser Gärten. I saw these gardens once in 1987 while waiting for my flight to Berlin, had ample time to get from the Hbf out to the gardens.

This time also in July I'm doing part of a day trip back to see that specific site, ie, more of a diversion on the night train Vienna to Hamburg, which conveniently stops in Hannover Hbf.

You're there for a few days...then I would recommend going out to Celle or Minden an der Weser if you tire of Hannover itself. The Bormann Museum in Celle show Hannover history, plus the military history of the Kingdom of Hannover until it lined up on the wrong side in 1866.

I find Minden a much more interesting place, have been there a few times....lovely town, eg the Zentrum.

I had to spend a day in central Hanover a couple of years ago between two legs of travel, and found it the dullest major German city centre I've ever been in. I would look at other towns in the general region.

Hi,

Have you already made hotel reservations in Hannover? Can't recommend a place in Hannover itself to stay since when I am there and decide to stay a night, or two or three, then I stay in Minden, some nice places but it depends on what you want.

Transferring trains in Hannover Hbf is super convenient, a junction point for going north, east, south, west on the ICE.

Minden is historically very interesting if you are into that, a Prussian Garrison town, you'll see evidence of that, plus from Minden you can take a taxi to Porta Westfalica.

Public transport only gets part of the way, then the hike is up the hill is more than one hour if the trail at some point is mud, I mean wet mud enough for you to slip and dislocate your shoulder. So, I gave it up on that try.

I've never been there, but my Rough Guide to Germany has 13 pages on it. My Lonely Planet guide has 13 pages, too. Rick Steves? Zero. Maybe you can find one of the other guides at your local library. And... I guess there's always TripAdvisor...

Thanks for pointing out the differences. I never use Trip Advisor....not interested in what it has to say.

Hannover is easily the most boring of the maior cities in Germany. But you could make good day trips from there. These include Celle, Hildesheim / Brauschweig (impressive Romanesque cathedrals) / Wolfenbüttel, Goslar and other towns in the Harz Mountains, Göttingen and Lüneburg. Even Bremen / Hamburg are only just under / over one hour away by train.
