Hannover <> Hamburg train line in 2026

According to this - https://www.der-metronom.de/fahrplan/qualitaetsoffensive-2026/ , the line between Hamburg and Hannover will be closed between May and July. But I can still see ICE tickets being sold on DB between Hamburg and Hannover, does anyone know whether these trains will be running. I have read mixed messages, some places say no trains will be running between Hamburg and Hannover and other places say some trains are running but will be rerouted adding an extra 45 mins to the travel time.

I have originally planned to go from Hamburg to Hannover but now with this, I'm rethinking as I'm not sure how I'm going to travel between the two. Even if there are replacement buses, given the distance, it will probably be a crowded and long trip.

The official website for the Hamburg-Hannover renovation project can be found here:

https://bauprojekte.deutschebahn.com/p/hamburg-hannover

If no trains are running, there will be a replacement service with high quality express buses via the autobahn, as was the case during the renovation of the Mannheim-Frankfurt Riedbahn line. You don't need to worry about getting a new ticket; just board the bus with your old one.

Just read the info provided by Deutsche Bahn InfraGo (network) - translated with DeepL:
"From Friday, May 1, 2026, to Friday, July 10, 2026, we will be constructing new signal boxes along the Lüneburg–Uelzen axis. At the same time, we will be carrying out renovation work between Maschen and Uelzen and between Uelzen and Hannover-Burg. During this time, extensive line closures between Hamburg and Hanover will be necessary. A replacement bus service will be set up. The timetable for the replacement service is currently being drawn up."
Source PDF as of Dec. 23: https://bauprojekte.deutschebahn.com/p/hamburg-hannover/pdf

The full project status presentation as of December 8, 2025 you can read here in German language:
https://bauprojekte.deutschebahn.com/media/projects/14682/docs/PR_hamburg-hannover_hannover_20251208.pdf

So, in the journey planner you will see connections which have an "SEV" or "EV" remark in the details which indicates replacement service by bus.

You can see and filter planned main projects on DB network on this page (German language only):

Thank you both for that.

It looks like some ICE trains are still running with reroutes.

For replacement buses, can I bring luggage on?

Tickets are for a route, not a train. So if DB sells tickets from Hamburg to Hannover for a date that means that they plan on being able to transport you from Hamburg to Hannover on that date. Not necessarily with the services the timetable shows now.

But may is ages away, far to far in the future to worry about now. Assume that you will be able to travel, and of course you will be able to take luggage. DB is a common carrier. They cannot suddenly decide no longer to transport you and your luggage.

Post edited to add the following clarification: many of my comments below relate to the full swathe of timetable changes resulting from the Hamburg-Hannover trackwork, not just the ICE route between the two big cities, as there are major flow-on effects. The point-to-point route is in many ways less affected, but it is simply too early to say.

There are indeed plans to redirect the Hamburg-Hannover ICEs rather than cancel them altogether. The most affected stretch of track is in fact between Lüneburg and Hannover - Lüneburg itself should still be accessible via Hamburg-Harburg, at least to an extent, but Lüneburg-Uelzen and beyond will be buses only.

(Unfortunately Hamburg-Bremen and Bremen-Hannover are also going to be affected by this - long-distance trains aren't going to be running on the latter line, though it shouldn't be closed completely.)

However, the possible [local] replacement timetable is proving a bit controversial (e.g. the local authorities in Lüneburg and Uelzen are not happy with the current plans, which don't include [m]any express buses), but it's not actually out yet. It's due 'early in the new year'. Definitely wait until the details are available before making any plans.

I'm afraid I'm a bit less optimistic than others about luggage space in rail replacement buses after some very bad experiences - it really depends on who's running / providing them. But if you get actual coaches for longer routes, it's fine - suitcases can go in proper storage below. There are bigger issues with more local replacements - if a regular bus turns up then it's a matter of squeezing on and hoping. They won't turn passengers with suitcases away, but if the bus is full, you're out of luck.

(Thankfully, planned track closures between major stations tend to work better than those due to short-term incidents.)

Anyway, wait for the revised timetable before deciding anything. Hamburg-Hannover is important enough that they'll have something functional set up. They've certainly had enough practice with the current Hamburg-Berlin trackwork!

(Background: I live on a nearby rail route with dodgy bridges in both directions, one of which has been out of action for a decade[!], the other on and off regularly and for the foreseeable future. Sometimes the alternatives are very smooth - sometimes they, er, aren't.)

When i looked at https://karte.bahn.de/de/region/DB_Fernverkehr, it indicates that there will still be trains running. Not all are replacement buses.

On the DB site, when i query the Hamburg to Hannover connections, I do see ICE trains with duration extended to 2h 4m (these used to be 1h 20m before May) so this suggests to me that the trains listed in the timetable for May already has catered for the rerouting.

Here are the screenshot of comparison on the duration and also on the journey stops for a random date in Feb and May

I am assuming these trains listed in May are already finalised, are they not?

I was referring to the full replacement timetable, which includes regional trains - this definitely isn't out yet, but yes, a number of the ICE changes seem to be in the system already. [I have edited my previous post accordingly.]

That said, if you look at the sheer range of routes affected, there will contine to be adjustments - the words 'circa' and 'rund' are doing a lot of heavy lifting in the description of the delays, and platforms etc are definitely not fixed.

As others have said, at this stage you can assume the following: there will be trains or a replacement service between the major cities, the travel time will be longer than usual, and if you have bought a ticket, it will be honoured for you and your luggage. I wouldn't assume you will have the exact same seat in the exact same ICE at the exact same time listed now. You might, but it is much too early to say.

Ok thanks noted. The fact there are trains still running is good enough for me. I can’t imagine how crowded or long a bus will take to travel the same distance !

Does that mean I should buy my ticket asap just to at least secure a spot on the train?

I was also planning to go to Lüneburg by regional train but I’m pretty sure this is now a bus replacement. I’m fine with that, just hope they have factored for enough buses to and back.

No need to buy a ticket yet - there's no risk of the route itself selling out.

For a day trip to Lüneburg, if you plan it from Hamburg, you may well still be able to get a train from Harburg. From Hannover it will be a (slow) bus. But it's too early for the details.

Is this not a popular route? When is a good time to buy?
