Hello we are going to take the RS Germany tour next year. We are arriving in Hamburg early the day before and thinking about taking the train to Schwerin Castle.
Good or bad idea?

The castle is very nice and is surrounded by attractive gardens. I think garden access is free. In addition, the historic area of the town (very near the castle) is very pretty; allow time for walking around there as well. Schwerin is definitely worth a visit.
Note that this area of far-northern Germany can be very cool and somewhat rainy even in mid-summer when the rest of the country may be sweltering.

It's a good idea, since you're arriving early in the day. Put the luggage in a coin locker. The ride to Schwerin on the IC train takes ca. one hour, straight shot.
