Our first visit to Hamburg will be May 31-June 2. Many of the hotels that Rick recommends are booked. Anyone have other suggestions for a good place to stay or things to do? We don't mind taking public transportation but we will be at the end of our trip and the easier the better. We are in our 60-70'S. Thanks in advance.

I stayed at the Madison a few years ago. Very nice and in a good location.
I mostly wanted to visit Miniatur Wunderland and the Madison was within walking distance.

Most often, I stay at Hotel Fürst Bismarck, 3 star establishment, located on Kirchenallee. The hotel is located just opposite of Hamburg central station. Take the Kirchenallee exit out of Hamburg Hbf. You'll see it across the street.
This is a very comfortable hotel, has old fashion charm.

We recently booked a train, hotel and Hamburg Card package through the Hamburg tourist office. 1st class train tickets included in the package. This is our first trip to Hamburg too. Hotel is Best Western Plus Hotel St. Raphael. You might want to check the tourist office first.

For a hotel in Hamburg, I would want to have water nearby - whether it's the Alster or the Elbe. Of course, I would also want good public transport connections. And as always, sorry, I would avoid the area around the main train station.
Since my favorite hotel in Hamburg is no longer available since COVID-19, I can't give you a specific recommendation.

We used the Premier Inn Centre City Hamburg. It's a 15 minute walk from the main train station. Because of the centralized location we were able to walk to most of our sightseeing destinations.

My trip will starts in a couple of weeks. I do have no own experiences, yet. It sounds nice and it‘s near the Clouds Heaven Restaurant and Bar (I love them!) and near the St. Pauli tube station and near Musical and Theatre Stages.
10-20 Minutes walk to the Landungsbrücken/ River Elbe.
