Half day Rhine cruises

I haven't been able to find a schedule for the boat cruises from Boppard to St Goar or From Bingen to St Goar.

We are a couple travelling with our grandsons aged 11 and 14. We have about 4-6 hours en route from Diez to Kalsrhue by car so will need to park and return to the car.

What would be our best option to include the most beautiful section?

Many thanks,

Jean Hay

We did this tour last September. The local boat tour is called the K-D line. It stands for Koln (Cologne), - Düsseldorf. It is listed under kdrhine.com They will list the schedule going down river from Mainz or up River from Cologne. We got on the boat in St Goar and went up to Assmanshausen and back. The next day we went to Koblenz and took the train back to St. Goar. The boats are vey nice and have narration in German and English. We found that the info in the Rick Steves book is better because it gives you a number that corresponds to a number on the River and tells you about that particular part of the journey. Hope this helps.

The schedule is here. Use the red schedule on the right as that is down river and will be faster.

Best would be to drive to Bingen and take one of the boats like the 10:30 or 11:30 boats to Boppard in order to get the best of the Rhine Gorge. It takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. Then walk up to Boppard station and take the train back to Bingen Stadt then walk back to the KD dock to get back in the car.

Current schedule, there are trains returning at 1:07 pm, 1:15 pm, 2:07 pm, 3:07 pm, 3:15 pm. The departures at 15 past the hour require a connection at Bingen Hbf. to the local train to Bingen Stadt, one stop away. Takes 50 minutes or less. The train tickets for the 4 of you should be 20.40 EUR total.

Many thanks, Janet and Sam. What brilliant information and such quick replies. Exactly what I needed to know - and much more. This is a fantastic site. Will get the book. You may be hearing from me again.
Cheers, Jean

Note: there are two rail stations in Bingen, Bingen (Rhein) Hbf and Bingen (Rhein) Stadt. The Bingen Stadtbahnhof is near the K-D dock. When you take the train back to Bingen, don't get off at the first station, Bingen Hbf, or you'll have a long walk back to you car.

Looking at Google Maps, it doesn't look like there are a lot of parking spots by the station. In fact there are not that many at the K-D dock, but there are more, out on Hafenstrasse/Hindenburganlage. It's about a 5 minute walk between the station and the dock. Cross the tracks on the pedestrian bridge just west of the station.

NOTE: That KD/Rhine website sells an overpriced day pass for 31 Euro that you do NOT need - the standard fare bought at the KD kiosk in Bingen for Boppard to Bingen costs 26.40.
