Half day in the Rhin

Hi

On October 9 we are travelling from Múnich to, I think… Bacharach on our way back to Ámsterdam and then America, on Oct 10. The earliest time we can get there is 12.20, Is it viable to take the 15.15 cruise Bacharach to St. Goar, stay an hour and return (cruise) to Bacharach 17.20? Spend the night in Bacharach.
Or it is better to arrive to Bingen, and take the cruise in Bingen? Is the cruise hop on . hop off, so we can go down in Bacharach on our way back?

Thank you in advance for your responses

Going to the Rhine is a detour for you on the Munich-Amsterdam route, but if you are going to do that, you should start in Bingen and cruise to St. Goar. Bacharach to St. Goar is only 45 minutes and only half of the most scenic part. It is worth your time to see all of it.

So after you arrive in Bacharach at 12:20, drop bags (it will be better without them!) and have a quick lunch, then take the train at 13:20 to Bingen Rhein Stadt station (13:56) for the 14:30 cruise from Bingen. Your boat arrives 15:55 in St. Goar - which gives you time to see Rheinfels Castle before you return to Bacharach by train (takes only 10 minutes, 17:56 or 18:56?) The 17:20 cruise boat to Bacharach is probably too early for a visit to Rheinfels, and it takes too long (1 hr 10 minutes) to get back to Bacharach - AND you have already seen this part by boat anyway.

There is actually a good earlier train combination - 5:23 from Munich Hbf (2 hours earlier than your plan) with the same one change 300 metre walk between the two stations at Frankfurt airport, getting you in 2 hours earlier at 10:20, if that would help.

Early breakfast though.... or take it with you on the train and enjoy at leisure.

No the boats are not "hop on and hop off" but you could get off one and on the next if you pay and plan that way.

For me, I'd take the boat downstream (south to north) and then back by train. The slow train goes past the same castles and valley, next to the river, and the view is of the same stuff just a fair bit more quickly.

To go one way by boat and then back by another boat would be a bit too slow for me and a bit repetitive. The view on the boat is all-around, and the boat goes slowly enough to see everything from all angles. If even that is too fast for you so you want to go back for more, just take the upstream boat, north to south, which because of the current goes even slower than the downstream boat and may give you enough so that you are happy going back by train.....

If you are open to staying in St. Goar instead of Bacharach your day will probably be easier...

Just take the train from Munich (9:28) to Bingen Rhein Stadt (13:59) and catch the KD boat there at 14:30 to St. Goar (15:55.) Drop bags at your St. Goar hotel and visit Rheinfels Castle. Now you have no additional train trips to make. Some St. Goar hotels have nice views of the river, and this is a very scenic waterfront. Bacharach lacks hotels with nice views across the water.

View from St. Goar side

There are other departure times before 9:28 from as well. Be sure to check train times for your specific travel date.

Thank you for your great
advices, I Will take Russ s , sleep in St.. Goars, but leaving Múnich 7.28. One last question about the connecting times in Mannheim and Mainz, is it ok 11 and 14 minutes for the change?
