Odd question but in the US we know when we see Walgreens/Rite Aid/Publix/Target etc that they are grocery stores/pharmacy stores. What are the names we should be looking for in Germany? What are their typical store names for these kinds of shops?
Kaufland
Lidl
Aldi Süd
Real
Edeka
Penny
Netto
Norma
Aldi Nord
Rewe
ALDI! A word I recognize LOL
Thank you so much for this list!
Also:

Depending on where you are, you might also find Famila, Globus, or others.
As for drug stores--places like CVS or RiteAid--you might try Budnikowski (Budni), Rossmann, or dm. For a pharmacy, anywhere you see the word Apotheke. In the US the drug store and the pharmacy are usually combined; in Germany they are not.
Thanks everyone. This is really helpful.
Wanna add that in the US grocers and pharmacies can be regional or national chains.
My favorite grocery store name; Piggly Wiggly which I shopped at in the 80’s in Nebraska.
I‘ve been frequenting REWE which has smaller stores around the major cities of Berlin. I love going to grocery stores and buying local products and it’s usually cheaper than going out to eat every meal.
V-Markt is another one (more like a Target really but better).

pharmacy
Am I wrong or isn't a pharmacy actually the English word for a shop where you can get medicine prescribed by doctors? This is only available in 'Apotheken' in Germany.
Müller, Rossmann and dm only sell drugstore items.
I have to admit I'm an organic food lover. That's why I buy as little as possible in the regular grocery store and almost everything on the farmers market. But if that is not possible then there are some organic grocery store chains as well (sure there are more):
- Alnatura
- basic
- Denns
- VollCorner
You are right about what a pharmacy is in the USA. It now is usually a department in a grocery or a larger drug store rather than a pharmacy only store.
There is a very lost Spar Express store in Canberra, Australia. It's the only one we have seen outside of Europe. It's a mystery why it's there as it's not near the German embassy. But seeing the tree logo is a nice reminder of our time in Germany.
