Green Vault Tickets

If we want to visit the Green Vault (with the green diamond) - should I visit the old and the new?
I read that I should buy tickets in advance - is this true for Oct 24 2018?
If so, I checked the website and I was really confused since there are soooo many museums and I don't which ticket to buy to enter the Green Vaults. If I have 4 hrs - which museums would you recommend?

It was quite overwhelming - the number of museums and exhibits etc.

Is the museum far from Neumarkt (our hotel)?

Thank you in advance for your help!

The Old or "Historic" Green Vault is the better of the exhibits, but I enjoyed going through the entire palace. For the 23 Euro, I felt the Kombiticket was worth it. I liked booking ahead because I was able to go have a good breakfast, then get in during the morning before the place got too crowded. It's not at all far from your hotel if you're in Neumarkt. That entire area is quite walkable. I recommend getting a table outside at Augustiner an der Frauenkirche for good food, beer, and views.

What is the green vault? That's one that bypassed me. What city is it in?

Whatever else you decide , DO NOT miss the Neues ( new ) Green Vault upstairs . This gallery is filled with the fanciful and evocative work of the master jeweler Johann Melchior Dinglinger . His work is on a level equivalent to that of Carl Faberge , albeit from an earlier era in history . Your choice of the other museums is largely based on your interests . The porcelain museum was of great interest for us , and since we were a week in Dresden , the art in The Albertinum Museum was wonderful , having a great collection of Neue Sachlichkeit painting . The Historic Green Vault is a reconstruction of the original multi-room area that was severely damaged during WWII, with ornate decoration throughout the rooms. The New Green Vault exhibits objects from the collection in plainer and more modern surroundings. Personally they're both equally worth visiting, although the size of the collection can be overwhelming.

I visited a couple of years ago and since then the ticketing situation has changed, so I don't know the details. However, outside really busy times I don't think it's vital to book tickets in advance - you can always check on the site and see if it looks as if a timeslot is getting heavily booked.

As a solo traveler, in 2015 I was able to arrive at the ticket booth and buy a ticket for the Historic Green Vault at the next (every-15-minute) entry period. I believe there was just one ticket available for that time-slot. I have seen no reports of sell-outs, but I think one might wait around awhile on some occasions, especially in a group of some size. Many other Dresden museums are in the same complex, so the time wouldn't be wasted as long as you had the option of leaving and returning to the museum you chose for the interim (I haven't checked on those procedures).
