Which (optional) excursions are the best on a Gran European Viking River Cruise in April 2026?
Try posting your question on ann appropriate site such as Cruise Critic.
I have been on a bunch of Viking cruises. Unfortunately, this is an impossible question to answer for someone else.
It depends on your interests, budget, and any mobility issues.
A few thoughts. Anything that says panoramic is primarily a bus tour. Some of the excursions are more cultural, some are more adventurous. They will list the ‘difficulty of each excursion. We found the moderate ones very doable.
In some cases, we stayed in town after a tour was over walking around or having a meal.
Enjoy your trip.
We did this tour in 2018 going from Budapest to Amsterdam and a quick look at the itinerary shows they’ve tweaked it quite a bit, so looking at it without knowing your interests and mobility and their prices makes it difficult to make recommendations.
However… two things to keep in mind are the day of the week you are visiting and the amount of bus time to get to an activity. For instance, in Nuremberg some sites were advertised on Viking site but closed on our actual date. For the Lipizzaner tour in Vienna, the horses weren’t doing anything at the time of day/date we were there, so we just walked through their barn and the empty arena.
We weren’t impressed by the Lipizzaner tour or the Bavarian Cruise and Baroque Town of Scharding. We did enjoy the Hungarian Horseman, Kinderdijk windmill and cheese tour and Rothenburg ob der Tauber tour. We arrived early in Budapest and with their excellent transportation system were able to see some of the optional tour offerings on our own.
Thank you for your reply. It was most helpful!!
