GP to MUC airport: realistic or risky?

Hi,

I will be in Munich in early August and am contemplating spending the last 2 days of the trip in the GP region, so as to be able to explore a bit of Bavaria (thinking some combination of GP, Fussen, Mittenwald, Oberammagau). My hesitation is around having enough time to get to MUC airport to catch a 0930 flight to Paris on a Sunday morning. Google Maps shows it as being a 1.5 hour drive and I wouldn't think there would be a lot of traffic on a Sunday morning going in that direction, but am a bit nervous about missing our flight.

Thanks in advance.

You'll want to give yourself a lot more time than that since those times are usually optimistic, you won't know the route well ( hopefully you will have a GPS), and you'll have to gas up the car and drop it off at the rental lot before even hitting the terminal doors. There are a couple of gas stations near the airport open 24/7 - check them out on Google Maps. Be sure to check the rental agency's Sunday hours. I'd give yourself a big fat time cushion if you're determined to stay in GP the night before your flight.

When you factor in some fudge factor for google's 'optimistic' times, getting gas, turning the car in, getting to the terminal and giving yourself 90 minutes for security etc., I figure you have to be wheels moving at 5AM.

How far ahead of departure time does your airline close of boarding? With some airlines it is 30 minutes before scheduled departure. If yours is one such, add

but am a bit nervous about missing our flight.

That is quite understandable in your circumstances. I would be nervous too.

There are a lot of things that could happen to delay your arrival by car - traffic (no matter what day), mechanical problems, getting lost. I would never plan on going that far by car without a huge time cushion. I would be far more confident if coming in by train. At least spend the last night near the airport . Freising would be (has been) my choice.

Thanks for the input. I think we’ll play it safe & maybe flip the itinerary to do GP first, then Munich.
