I've been to Baden-Baden and was not impressed. Other towns that also offer a Konus Karte (free train and bus travel in the Black Forest) are Bad Herrenalb, which you can get to from Karlsruhe, Bad Wildbad, which you get to from Pforzheim, and Freudenstadt, sometimes called the capital of the northern Schwarzwald, which you can get to from Rastatt. Each of them offers a traditional (ie, Kleiderfrei) hot springs.

The Palais Thermal in Bad Wildbad, which was built in Moorish style by a late 19th century count, is particularly elegant.

I stayed in Gengenbach in May 2017 and very much enjoyed it (along with the free travel on trains in the Black Forest).

You might check Bavaria Ben's website to see if he covers that area. He has great travel info on much of Germany.

Thanks everyone for the replies, they will help me pick a location. I have also been to Freiburg and don't need to go back.

Another vote for Gengenbach. I've stayed twice, for a week last year.

freiburg is charming and has a good daily market. There are several shops, we bought 3 pairs of birkenstocks forvhe price of one pair in the US. Freiburg is 20 minutes by train to Titisse(sp). My favorite place and would love to return there again.

My wife and I enjoyed Triberg for the few hours we were there. It would have been a nice place to spend a night.
