A friend and I are planning to spend a week in the Harz Mountains next year sometime between August and October. I would like to be there when leaves are still on the trees but the heat isn’t (usually) too bad. Anyone have a suggestion for an ideal window during those three months?
Try weatherspark.com for weather info. Scroll down the page for the section on best time to visit.
The site condenses historic data from 1980 to 2016. As you may be aware, recent years tend to be hotter & more violent than the averages.
September and early October are great for hiking. The Brocken, the highest peak of the mountains, however has a very harsh climate, so you need to dress accordingly.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Not the Hartz, but Pottsdam.
A phenomenal heat record: so hot were the past five months in Germany! The old record from 2003 was beaten by a full 1.6 °C! Scale on the left shows the temperature deviation from the first 30 years of the record, the color curve the data smoothed over 11 years.
Potsdam and Harz are totally different, over 170 km in between.
General info: Weather is not predictable until 3-4 days ahead and not always the same every year.
Mid to end of August you can still expect nice temp warmer summer days, not too hot. But can occur.
Mid to end of October the Harz trees shall have turned partially into yellow. Do a picture search.
Rule of thumb: Per 100m altitude reduce temperature by appr 1c. Today Goslar 16c, Brocken 9c.
