My boyfriend and I will be doing a self-guided day trip from Munich to see Neuschwanstein etc...do you have any suggestions for things to do in Füssen or any other beautiful places to stop along the way? We like to find our own quiet little corners of the world when we travel and it would make the day extra special.
By far, our favorite site between Munich and Fussen is Schloss Linderhof, Mad King Ludwig's opulent 19th century residence. Smaller than his other two "castles," the grounds and interior put the others to shame. It is also a very beautiful drive to Linderhof. Most people do Oberammergau, but we found it to be way too touristy and extremely over-rated.
Enjoy!
I really enjoyed the museum in Fussen, but we spent the night in this picturesque little town.
.
Thank you for the replies! Ed, do you know if there are buses or anything that go between Füssen and Linderhof Palace? We will not have a vehicle of our own. If not I think we will be happy to check out Füssen and the museum.
Wieskirche, a magical church in the middle of meadows near Füssen. The architect that built it literally fell in love with the church and built himself a small home within sight.
I would prefer to stop in Andechs and take in one of the really great German Beerhalls.

The Wieskirche is indeed a beauty. If you love this style, the much-overlooked monastery in Ettal (a few kilometres after Oberammergau and on the route to the Linderhof) is not to be missed.
I was unimpressed with Wieskirche - just another over-the-top-gawdy Baroque church. I spent five minutes, tops, in the church, then went across the road and had lunch. Lunch was the high point of the visit.
You can take a regional train from Munich in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, get off in Murnau, and take another train to Oberammergau. From Oberammergau, there are periodic buses from Oberammergau to Linderhof, to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and to Hohenschwangau (castles).
I've been to Oberammergau twice, both times in the fall on non-passion-play years, and never found it too crowded. It would be a nice place to stop if you wanted to see both Linderhof and Neuschwanstein. If you went to Linderhof the first day, you could take the bus into Garmisch-Partenkirchen and back that evening. I would recommend staying at Gästehaus Richter. It's close to the train station and bus stops, nice rooms, a good price for Oberammergau, and Frau Richter speak good English and can help you with your plans.
There is quite a lot to see and do in Füssen. Besides Neuschwanstein, you can tour Hohenschwangau, the castle that Lugwig grew up in. The town, itself, is interesting, with it's pedestrian streets and Fachwerk buildings. You might find that you can spend the entire day there. If not, the train back to Munich might stop at Kaufbeuren. Parts of the 800 year old town wall is still up, with it's Wehrgang and towers.
I think the over-the-top-gawdy Baroque church of the Wieskirche was what made it charming to me. It blows my mind all of the glitz and glamor of people who thought they could buy their way to heaven. It is a stark contrast of the plain evangelical churches. But to each their own. I think it is worth a stop. We really enjoyed it.
We also enjoyed Oberammergau. It is a bit touristy, but I loved all the murals on the walls. To me it is classic Bavaria.
Enjoy your time!!
