Going to Eagles Nest by car from Munich en-route to Salzburg

We are driving from Munich to Salzburg, via the Eagles Nest. What time do we need to depart Munich to safely arrive, in time to catch a bus up to the Eagles Nest. Also can you pre-purchase tickets online, to collect when you arrive. If so what website, most that I have looked at are tours from either Munich or Salzburg

Information for the Eagles Nest can be found here. Ticket for the bus to the Nest are sold on a first come, first served basis. I've always bought tickets at the time and never had trouble getting on one of the next buses to leave. According to ViaMichelin, it's a 3H40M trip from Munich to the where the buses start up.; if you leave Munich at 9 AM and don't get caught in a traffic jam, you should get there before noon in plenty of time.

There is a bookable tour in English from Berchtesgaden with the Eagles Nest Tours.

@Lee: Which route did you request? My viamichelin gives 1:52 for the fastest route via Salzburg Süd (toll sticker needed for the short leg from the Austrian border to the exit Salzburg Süd). The toll free route via Bad Reichenhall and Bischofswiesen takes approx. 0:30 longer. Considering the numerous construction sites on the A8 I'd assume three hours.

in time to catch a bus up to the Eagles Nest.

There are buses every 25 min.

I'd try to leave around 9am. We have driven from Munich airport to Berchtesgaden and vice versa many times and it never took more than 2:30. Munich itself is closer than it's airport.

I've found 2:30 hours or less is typical even with a "standard" amount of traffic on the A8 (I consider standard coming to a complete stop at least once and crawling in stop and go traffic for a few kms).

Anything over three hours I would consider unusually heavy traffic.
