Giving a gift to a host

I have a couple questions on the custom of giving a small gift to our host at the small hotels we will be staying in. What type of gift is common? I imagine if there would be an item that represents where I am from (small town in Central Illinois), that might be suitable. Also, when is it appropriate to give it to them; upon arrival, or when we are leaving? We will be staying at Hotel Kranenturm in Bacharach, Hotel Gerberhaus in Rothenburg, and Hotel Uhland in Munich. Also in Italy we will be staying at Agriturismo Costa di Campo in Vernazza, and Il Canto del Sole in Tuscany.
Thanks!
Lisa

It is not custom to give a gift when you are paying for your stay. The best "gift" you can give the hotel is to write a positive review on one of the travel sites if you enjoy your stay.

You do not give gifts to people running a hotel or B&B. It just isn't done. Imagine if everyone did this, what would they do with all the trinkets, etc.? This is a business and you are paying them to sleep there.

Write a review on Trip Advisor if you liked them, which is like money in the bank for small businesses, or mention their name with a link on your trip report here on the forum if you write one.

If the owners of the "small hotels" are relatives of yours, by all means take gifts. Otherwise, do not! You have a business arrangement with these people, not a social engagement.

The others are correct. You are not their personal guest, you are a paying customer. If I particularly like (or dislike) a place, I do a review. Enjoy your trip and don't worry about taking up precious suitcase space with items that would likely end up in the trash.
