How does one buy gift cards in the US that are good in Germany? All the cards we have found here (US) say they are not good internationally. We don't want store-specific cards, but rather something good as close to anywhere in Germany as possible. They are for our teenage grandchildren who moved there over the summer.

You might be able to buy a gift card at Amazon.de. If you are able to create an account for yourself and link a US cc you can search for “gift card” and purchase gift cards. Alternatively if you are able to transfer money to an account their parent(s) have, you can do that and have the parent(s) select some gift cards in Germany.

Get cards from a German store chain, like Saturn, Galleria Kaufhof, Media Markt, or if all else fails, Amazon.de.

Be careful about prepaid cards purchased in the US. There have been reports that some (many? most?) do not work overseas.
