We'll be in Munich for 4 days the end of April with our adult daughter. We've been to the Romantic Road towns many times ourselves but our daughter hasn't. I see there is a Romantic Road Bus. Have any of you taken it and do you recommend it? We don't want to rent a car for 1 day because of the hassle and expense. I'd appreciate any suggestions. We especially want to get to Dinkelsbuhl as we bought her a doll there over 30 years ago:-) Thanks
The Romantic Road coach leaves Munich Hackerbrücke bus station at 10:50 and arrives in Rothenburg at 15:45. It stops in Dinkelsbühl for 35 minutes. Is that long enough? It cost 38€ each for an adult.
On the other hand, there are train from Munich Hbf to Nördlingen hourly, taking about 2 hours and arriving at about half past the hour. There are several direct buses from Nördlingen to Dinkelsbühl, one at 12:39, arriving Dinkelsbühl at 13:36. There is a direct bus from Dinkelsbühl to Rothenburg at 16:25, arriving at Rothenburg at 17:20. The entire trip can be made with a Bayern-Ticket for 33€ for three people.
There is also a one-stop bus connection leaving Dinkelsbühl at 14:38, giving you and hour in Dinkelsbühl, arriving Rothenburg at 16:55.
Thank you, Lee for your prompt answer. After you get to Rothenburg can you start back toward Munich? How often do the busses go north and south. 35 minutes will work if we walk fast. Does it go to Nordingen too?
I wouldn't bother with Rothenburg unless I spent a night there. It's not worth it to stop in Rothenburg, say "Rothenburg, check", then leave. There is only one Romantic Road coach a day, but you could leave Rothenburg by train to Munich right after arriving.
The Romantic Road Coach does stop for 15 minutes in Nördlingen on the way from Munich to Dinkelsbühl.
Going south, the Romantic Road Coach leaves Rothenburg at 13:20, stops for 35 minutes in Dinkelsbühl, 15 minutes in Nördlingen, arrives Munich at 17:50.
The Romantic Road Coach schedule is here.
The public buses are included in the [train schedules How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online when you search to or from Dinkelsbuhl. From Rothenburg ob der Tauber back to Munich by train takes about 3 hours and 2-3 connections. I'd also prefer to spend the night, if going that far.
Thank you for your helpful replies with websites. Now we might decide to rent a car for the day and drive to those Romantic Road towns. It'd be so much easier and faster to not depend on train and bus schedules. We'd get a small car and pay for full coverage or credit card might even cover insurance. My husband is used to driving in Germany and Europe. Where would be the easiest place to rent the car?
