Getting from Munich to Venice

We're hoping to spend 2 days in Venice (Thursday-Fri). On a Thursday, 8am nonstop flt MUC -VCE is around $305/person, one way. The rest of the flights are slightly cheaper but arrive VCE between 7:20pm-11:00pm. I understand we still need to take a water taxi to the island. Leaving Wed., similar flts are available & some are slightly cheaper. If we take the 1-stop flights on Wed, similar airfares but arrive VCE in the afternoon. Would appreciate other insights as well as train options.

For train options, see bahn.de. On a sample date of Wed May 24, I see a direct train leaving Munich at 11am arrive Venice 6 pm for 60 Euro per person. This would be city center to city center so would eliminate airport trans and wait times. Enjoy your trip!

It's a beautiful train ride right through the Dolomites mountain range.
An earlier option is the 8.51, arriving in Venice at 16.40, with one change of trains in Verona.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and the tips!!!

New to taking the train, We're so excited. Do you recommend buying now? Prices for other days are a bit higher. Since MUC-Italy is a popular route, should I add in reserved seats too? Are these the same tickets that need to be validated before you get on? New to the bahn.de site, please see below. Is what I'm buying correct? Thanks

Badgers,

I checked the train that you listed as departing on 24 May, and they currently show a Saver price of €69.90 PP. If you're willing to commit to that departure, it would be a good idea to buy the tickets now before the price increases.

Note that you can also buy tickets for travel in Germany and Italy using www.trainline.eu, which sells tickets as the same prices as the rail networks.

When you arrive at Venezia Santa Lucia, you'll probably be taking a Vaporetto from the station to your hotel. There's a ticket booth to the left when you exit the station, so you can buy your Vaporetto tickets there. NOTE that those have to be validated on the electronic reader before boarding the boat. If you forget, you'll risk hefty fines which will be collected on the spot. That same rule applies to locally purchased tickets for Regionale trains, Metro, Buses, etc. but with the other modes of transport, validation is performed by inserting the ticket inside a machine which stamps it with time & date. Ticket for the fast trains such as the Freccia do not have to be validated, since they have compulsory seat reservations.

should I add in reserved seats?
Yes. It saves you walking through the train with your luggage, looking for free seats. I prefer two seats across, at the window with a table. It guarantees that one of you is facing forward.
On the platform you'll find a display called »Wagenreihung«. It shows the position of the carriages along the platform.

but I did this train from Ansbach-Munich-Venice roundtrip (with an overnight in Bolzano). I had a Bahn 50 card, which entitled you to 50% discount on all fares. They may still be available for purchase? Anyway, saved me a ton of money.

Well, but there would be savings only for the comparatively short leg within Germany. Secondly, you would need a Bahncard for every traveler, which would cost a lot of money. Searching for a savings fare is certainly more promising.

Buying tickets now will save about 28 EUR pp. These are like airline tickets, you are committed to taking that particular train on that particular day. You can cancel it up to the day before by paying a 19 EUR fee, but if you need to change the date, you will pay the going fare on that date, probably the walk-up fare of 97.60 EUR pp.

Thank you, greatly appreciate the help!

Someone mentioned this option. I didn't see it on bahn.de for May 24 -
"An earlier option is the 8.51, arriving in Venice at 16.40, with one change of trains in Verona."
Are there other sites to check for train options?
Is there a night train?

I do: Munich dep. 8:51 (EC 85), Verona PN arr. 14:58 / dep. 15:30 (FR 9793), Venice SL arr. 16:40. Please check again. Tickets for that connection are probably easiest to get at trainline.eu.

There is a night train (Night Jet, operated by ÖBB), Munich dep. 23:11, Venice arr. 8:24. Book tickets either at the DB or at the Nightjet Website (https://www.nightjet.com).

However, you will pay an extra 36.20 EUR to take the EC-Regionali combination in order to get to Venice 1 1/2 hours earlier. That is because tickets on the EC 85 to Verona are exactly the same price as taking the later direct EC train to Venice. When you get to Verona, you have to buy tickets on the Regionale Veloce to Venezia S. Lucia costing 9.05 EUR pp. That gets you to Venice at 16:48.

If you take the Frecciarosso that gets to Venice at 16:40, it will cost an extra 14.90 EUR pp, and those are SuperEconomy tickets that also need to be bought now to get that price. Tickets are completely nonrefundable.

Thank you!!!
On our ticket is: Mitte 053 054 and GANG 051 052
I'm assuming these are our seat#s since there are 4 of us. Does anyone know if we're all in the same compartment/booth or are we in 2 different cars/wagen? Do we each need a copy of the ticket? This is saver award, 2nd class, do they allow change of seats for a fee (if needed)?

"Mitte" means middle, "Gang" means aisle. So they look like 4 seats in a compartment. You should also see "Wagen", which is the carriage number. You'll just have the name of whoever bought the ticket and noting 4 people.
