Getting from LUX to Cochem, Germany

We, 4 adults, are flying into LUX airport and want to know the "best" (convenient yet economical) way to get to Cochem where we start our 3 week tour of Germany. Do we take a bus from the airport directly to Trier or Cochem ? Or do we take a bus south to Luxembourg city and hook up with trains going north? Can we take advantage of the Lander ticket prices if it is 2 countries, Luxembourg and DE?

The German Bahn website does not show any connections, train or bus, between Luxembourg airport and Cochem.

There is a "Länder-Ticket" for the state of Rheinland-Pfalz plus Luxembourg. It is valid on all regional trains in Rheinland-Pfalz and on all trains in Luxembourg except the TGVs. There are direct (no change) train connections (RE or Regional Express) from Luxembourg Gare all the way to Cochem (Mosel) via Trier.

No, the Rheinland-Pfalz ticket is valid from the border station (Igel) only. You need either tickets for the Luxembourg leg in addition or a so-called "Rheinland-Pfalz-ticket LUX" (€36 for two travellers), which covers the leg from the Luxembourg station to Igel and all Rheinland -Pfalz.

use the Luxembourg Railways website, it has the local bus schedules built in. It can be slow to respond. The best way is to get ONE bus to Centrale station and then a train to Cochem, beware suggested itineries with more than one bus, they may save a few minutes but you have to change at local stops with little info.

in the enqiry start typing Aeroport - bizarrely the Paris airport is suggest first but eventually you get a suggestion with a green and yellow H symbol and just the word Aéroport, select that. Then search Cochem (mosel) for the destination. The bus fare into the city is about €2.

The Rheinland-Pfalz+LU ticket is by far the cheapest way of getting to Cochem and can be purchased at Luxembourg Gare Centrale (city centre railway station). The standard fare is over €31 each but an R-P+LU ticket is €48 for 4 people and covers you for any local trips around Cochem (inclduing bus) for the rest of the day. You must buy 1 ticket for the group, not 1 per person, and if the ticket has some blank boxes on it you should write your names in them. Most of the trains are new double deckers owned by Luxembourg, obviously the best view is upstairs!

Having said all that, the bad news. From 26. August to 10. September the railway line is closed between Luxembourg and Trier so there will be buses replacing trains. The bahn.de website appears to have missed this!

Download this file for the railway timetable. Use page 1 if you are in the work period or page 2 at other times
