Getting around Trier

Hi all, We’re headed out on the Best of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland tour in September, and decided to take the trains directly into Trier from from Frankfurt, but wonder about the situation at the Trier train station. Our hotel is the Rezidenz which is about a one mile / 23 minute walk. Normally we would be up for it but after an overnight flight and a 3 hour train ride i think we’d prefer a ride. Is Uber available in town? Is the area around the station generally safe?

Thanks

The area around the station is safe. There is a line up of taxis outside to meet every train so I'd just hop in a taxi and go. As you say, it's not far but it's also not exactly a direct route as you'd walk thru the pedestrian area of the old city which is a little twisty.

I also suggest you print out a googlemap of the location of the Residenz am Zucherberg. I had that but the print was pretty faint and my cabbie did not know where this hotel was. It's really an Assisted Living facility but they have a hotel wing so it's not used that much by general tourists. I think it might have been 10 E or so for him to get me there but to me very worth it. He stopped to ask another driver as we were exiting the train station and they had a discussion about best route (my German is non-existent but that seemed to be the intent).

I was wondering about the hotel but wow, rooms are huge, breakfast was very good and I loved saying hello to the residents in the halls. You eat breakfast in a separate dining area.

This is a fun, fun tour! I hope you'll be there an extra night as there is a lot to see in Trier.

Thanks Pam! That was super helpful info. Glad to hear taxis are plentiful and your description of the hotel makes it sound like even more of a unique adventure. Meanwhile we’re enjoying the anticipation. Thanks again.

What time of day are you expecting to arrive in Trier? What time is check-in? Sure, there are taxis there, just like most train stations. We walked it, from the rail station, and it was a pleasant, non-stressful walk. Its hard to explain how safe you can feel in European cities, compared to armed and angry American city environments.

MH, well, not sure if you have ever been on a RS tour or not. This hotel falls into the off the beaten track but definitely would stay at again category! It's very close to the pedestrian area and the rooms are actually large suites with a small living area, kitchen, dining table and the sleeping area.

Keep right as you exit the main entrance at Trier's Hauptbahnhof (main station). You'll see the bus area. Bus 3 runs every 10 minutes. Catch it (probably in Bay #4) - look for #3 on the front (with end destinations Feyen - Zewen - Igel, you are going in the right direction.) Pay the driver €2.20 each. It's a 9-minute ride to the Trier Galerie (mall) stop and 4 minutes on foot to your hotel from there.

@Stan - We land in Frankfurt around 8:30 AM on a Friday so I estimate, after clearing customs, getting a coffee and catching the train we’ll probably roll into Trier anywhere between 2:30 and 4:00 PM. Also, it is sad that we think in terms of safety as Americans.

@Pam - Thanks again for the scoop on the hotel. This will be our third RS tour (did BOE14, then Eastern Europe, and now revisiting this region which we thoroughly enjoyed). Thus far, I haven’t met a RS hotel that I didn’t like! My only regret is that we couldn’t get back to Paris again for this trip.

@Russ - The bus information is great. I think we’ll probably try your approach if only to get more if the local feel!

@MH - What are your tour dates? My family and I will be on the Sep 12-25 (GAS) Itinerary.

Unless I am staying at a place for a second time, I have started taking taxis to my accommodation from the train station. I has relieved a lot if stress for only a few dollars. In towns I can then usually walk when I go back to the station. In bigger cities, sometimes the return trip by public transpo, sometimes by cab

@Matt - I think we’re a week behind you... we start (I believe) around the 18th. We chose this time to be able to see Oktoberfest again. It’s an amazing site after dark.

@Stephen - Thanks for the insight. If we end up too bleary eyed to figure out the bus we may fall back on a taxi. It’s a shame Uber isn’t fully functional in Germany... it is so convenient.
