Germany to Switzerland on Train

I want to travel from Staufen im Breisgau (bahn.de) to Interlaken West (sbb.ch). How do I navigate the transfer between the German train to Swiss train at the border?

Just book your ticket from Staufen to Interlaken on the dbahn website. You will have 3 or so changes. You will see the transfer points when you select your train. Its just a matter of getting off one train, moving to the platform for the next train, and getting on it when it arrives.

Staufen is a teeeny tiny station - I am not even certain if it is staffed.

You can go from there on a regional train to Bad Krozingen.

A 4 or 5 minute connection onto another regional train to Basel. That can all be done with a D-Ticket or KONUS card.

You need to arrive at Basel SBB station, either the end point of your train or regional trains also sometimes terminate at Basel Bad station and you need another train or tram to Basel SBB. Easiest to get the frequent train from Bad Krozingen to Basel SBB.

There you join a train to Interlaken Ost, either direct or with a change at Bern.

Interlaken West is 3 minutes from the end of the line, it is the first Interlaken stop.

Thank you. I am aware that Staufen is a teeny village. I have been there many times and I just love it! The last time was Sept. 2024. I am aware of the Konus Card and have used it before. On this trip I want to go south into Switzerland to Interlaken for 1 night and then to Murren, another teeny village that I love. I don't fully understand how I to transfer from Basel Bad (German train) to Basel SBB (Swiss). I think the last time I had to walk a short distance.

Are you looking at the dbahn site? I just picked a random date and see options that have a connecting train between Basel Bad bf and Basel sbb, or go to Basel sbb without a stop at B Bad bf. Perhaps play around with different train times, checking the transfer points under the "details" drop down.

Do not overthink this. And since you are going to Mürren you need to go to plam a trip to Mürren.
It is a common error to make a priori assumptions about the route, assuming that local and long distance travel are to be solved indipendenatly. However in this part of Europe train travel is end to end. You can find a route, and buy a ticket between every single station in Germany and every single station in Switzerland. Even the small request stop that I live next to...

So just go to www.bahn.de and enter:
From: Staufen
To: Mürren.
Enter your dates and preferred departure time and let the system figure out the route for you. There is no need to transfer between stations. All transfers suggested will be same station transfers.

And do not worry about connections. Trains are frequent along the entire route, and you just take the next one if you miss a train.

The route will usually be S bahn to Bad Krozingen, and RE7 to Basel from there. Most RE7 services finish at Basel Bad, but if you time it right you may have one that goes all the way to Basel SBB (the Swiss station).

It would be so helpful if the method of learning the route and connections would work so easily. Unfortunately even when I click on the provided link, I am not able to do it. I put in Staufen, but the bahn.de site will not take the name Murren. That's why I have resorted to using both bahn.de and sbb.ch.

but the bahn.de site will not take the name Murren.

The name of the town is Mürren, not Murren. You kann transliterate the umlaut as Muerren.

Thank you. Perhaps that is my problem.

That's why I have resorted to using both bahn.de and sbb.ch.

Always try to get the whole trip on one booking. That is important if something goes wrong. And booking with bahn.de (since your trip starts in Germany) is the obvious choice.

And pay attention to spelling, indeed...

Lastly: Do not worry about the many connections. That is par for the course when going from somewhere tiny to somewhere else tiny.
The railway is in charge of the whole trip, and must get you to your destination. So if you miss a connection you just take the next available train. In Switzerland trains are usually every half hour. Just do not leave to late.
