Germany-Switzerland Itinerary Questions - Family of 4

Hello all,
Our family of 4 (2 adults + 10yr + 8yr old girls) are planning a trip from US to Switzerland & Germany next Spring. Below is itinerary - hoping for feedback.
Day 1 - Arrive Munich
Day 2 - Munich (Viktualienmarket, Marienplatz, etc)
Day 3 - Munich (Deutsches museum?)
Day 4 - Munich? (Frezeitpark Marchenwald?)
Day 5 - Depart Munich for Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber (by auto)
Day 6 - Rothenburg day (Night Watch tour, etc)
Day 7 - Depart Rothenburg for Berner Oberland (Murren) (auto to DE/CH border, then by rail)
Day 8 - Murren
Day 9 - Murren
Day 10 - Depart Murren to Zurich, fly out

Questions:
- With 8 & 10 yr old children, are we choosing the right number of days in each location? Or should we consider 3 days in Alps and 2 days in Munich?
- We have heard feedback that these 3 locations are too much for 10 days and we should consider eliminating Rothenberg odT; however my wife is very excited for this unique location. Is it too much?
- Any feedback on our Munich plans above, or alternative suggestions for Munich?
- Suggestions for family friendly (and reasonably priced) accommodations in Rothenburg odT and Munich?
Please give advice/feedback, we appreciate all comments! Thanks in advance!

When in Spring? You might be too early for Mürren.

We stayed here on our recent trip to Munich:

https://laimerhof.de/

It is withing walking distance (5-10 minutes) from Nymphenburg Palace, the Botanical Gardens and Hirschgarten. A 15 minute tram ride will get you to Marienplatz and other main attractions. We enjoyed being in a quiet neighborhood and going out to eat at neighborhood restaurants. We stayed for three nights at the beginning of our trip last August and one night at the end. On our last night we had a small room, but for our first three nights the room was huge. Sebastian and Alexandra and other staff were very helpful with suggestions, directions and making restaurant reservations.

The Berner Oberland is very special and if you're going mid-June as you indicated in your other post, you should generally be alright with the weather (which is variable anyway.)

Mürren is beautiful but very sedate. I'd remain open to the alternatives. We liked Lauterbrunnen as a base.

Yes.

I agree that you have too much ground travel. If it were my family, with 10 days, and with your apparent interests, and knowing what I know now, I would use Zurich airport for...

1.) ...a 4-5-day stay in the Bernese Oberland
2.) ...a 4-5-day stay in Freiburg+Black Forest
3.) ...a short visit to Zurich at the beginning or end of our trip

Freiburg (only 2 hours by train from Zurich, 3 hours from the Bernese Oberland) is a very attractive university town with several diversions and is worth 1-2 days. It's very easy to navigate on foot when compared to Munich.

The Black Forest lies just at Freiburg's doorstep; it has several attractive old-world towns with handsome buildings that are not unlike Rothenburg's:

Gengenbach:

Gutach and the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum:

Haslach:

The Black Forest Railway is one of Germany's most scenic train routes and a true feat of engineering; it and the adjacent railways connect the above towns. See maps:

Also, west of Gengenbach is the French city of Strasbourg, should you find the time and the inclination, which is very easy to reach by train.

Note that staying in Gengenbach (or certain other small towns) means you receive a KONUS card free of charge. This card provides completely free transportation on all Black Forest train lines - all your outings would be free. KONUS isn't available for stays in larger towns (Freiburg, Baden-Baden, for example.) Details:

Here is a compendium of places to stay in the Black Forest and surroundings:

Zurich's old town is very attractive (and not too expensive if you're there for a short time!) Munich is a popular destination and a city I like, but I think the Black Forest region gives you an interesting look at Germany as well and fits much better with a visit to the Berner Oberland.

We agree with others who recommend longer stay in Murren (along with dropping Rotherburg, but I understand the diplomacy issue.) We had several memorable days in Murren, and the trips in and out will entertain the children - the funicular up from Lauterbrunnen and the short train ride (or very pleasant walk) into town. However, with only a few days you might find a more central locale more convenient -- Lauterbrunnen, or even Grindlewald (with easy access to the Jungfraujoch and Wengen). Hotel Gletschergarten in Grindlewald worked well for us on another part of the same trip. (https://www.hotel-gletschergarten.ch/en/hotel-grindelwald/hotel/) And a final suggestion with which you may be already familiar: we were able to check our bags through to the Zurich airport at the Murren RR station, and not touch them until we were inside the airport for check-in. Swiss efficiency at its best.
