Germany,Switzerland,Austria tour?

If anyone has gone on the Germany, Switzerland, Austria tour have you stayed in Trier before the tour more than just a day before the tour? If so, how long did you stay, what did you see and do in Trier? Please let me know about your thoughts and feelings about the city of Trier. I am thinking of going on this tour and am interested in knowing if it is worth the time to stay here longer than the tour days. I am not familiar with Germany. I do want to stay extra days in Vienna after the tour, but not sure before hand in Trier.

Trier is a great town if you're very interested in ancient Rome. I suspect that average folks that do the stuff on the tour won't feel a need for more time in Trier than that.

If you have an extra 24-48 hours I would suggest spending it independently in Cochem, one of the truly beautiful old-world towns in the Rhine Mosel region.

Cochem is easy to negotiate on foot.

If you fly into FRA, the train to Trier stops in Cochem roughly 50 minutes before reaching Trier. So it's very easy to get there, and very easy to get from Cochem to Trier by direct train (trains run hourly.)

ann, Trier would be nice enough to hang out in for an extra day, but we chose to stay one night in Bacharach on the way from Frankfurt to Trier. Easy enough to make the train to Trier from there.
