Germany on 12/28-1/5, Flying into and out of Munich.

Hello!
I am flying into Munich on 12/28 and heading to Garmisch-Partenkirchen where my daughter now lives and works. This is a last minute trip ( I miss her too much) and trying to make the most of our time there. We have a place booked in GP for the whole time, but have re-thought this, and now looking to add a few more places in.
--Should we add Switzerland and Austria?
--Should we stay in Munich for a day or two when we land before heading to GP? Thinking 3 days in GP should suffice. Recommendations on restaurants in GP? We may ski Zugspitze-but not sure its worth it to haul all our ski stuff.
--Austria: Salzberg or Innsbruck or?
--We have friends who have recommended the Glacier express but we would have to travel to St. Moritz to access. Worth it?
--Open to restaurant recommendations. I am a wine lover and foodie
--rental car or not?
Thank you so much for any help!!

Salzburg is an easy daytrip from Munich that is often recommended, straight shot on the train, you can hire a guide or DIY. I'm thinking Switzerland is a little far afield, as would be Innsbruck. Or you could make Salzburg an overnight and do a day in the Salzkammergut, either the infamous Hallstadt or the Wolfgangsee.

I enjoyed the Munich airport Hilton if you need/want to be airport close.

With only 8 nights, adding both Austria and Switzerland, as well as Munich is way too much. If you want to maximize the time with your daughter, will she be also travelling to these places with you? Having an idea of just what you want to see in Munich would give you an idea of how much time you would need there, and since you will want to be in Munich the night before your flight home (unless you have a late afternoon/-evening flight) you might want to put this at the end of your visit.

You dont want a car in Munich. GP is easily reached by train, and one assumes your daughter has a vehicle there.

Since your daughter lives in GP, she should be able to recommend dining options. Skiing is so weather dependant, I wouldn't make any firm plans more than a day or 2 in advance. You can rent ski equipment.

Salzburg is an easy train trip from GP, with enough to see and do for a couple of nights.

Oberammergau is just a short way from GP. Worth of a short visit and easy to get to.

It appears that Innsbruck is an 1.5 hour train ride from GP so could be an easy day trip. Salzburg is a 3+ hr trip but also doable especially for an overnighter. Your time is quite limited. You arrive in Munich on the 28th and leave from Munich on the 5th January, so those days will be taken up with travel. You will have 8 nights actually on the ground, not a lot of time if the reason for your trip is to visit your daughter. And don't forget that New Years Eve/Day will be in the middle of your time; New Years Day is a holiday in Germany so travel might be curtailed and busy with people returning home after the holiday.

You can rent ski equipment if there is snow.

in terms of "should we" - that is all down to what is important to you and your daughter.

Does she have all that time off so she can go anywhere with you or ....
