Germany Itinerary

Taking the kids to Germany in May...first time trip. There will be two adults plus 17 and 19year old. We only have 9 days. I was thinking about Munich and Salzburg. Please advise logical itinerary that would include castles and interesting things for active family. Should I look at flights in and out of Munich? Or would it be better to fly into Munich and home from Frankfurt? All input is appreciated. Also, hotel advice. Upper moderate would be great.

Thank you!

Why go to Frankfurt if you stay near Munich?

Near Salzburg - salt mines (Hallein, Hallstatt, Bertchesgaden), Ice caves (Werfen, Hallstatt), castle at Werfen. Search for 'sommerrodelbahn' - summer toboggan and 'Fun Forest' or 'Adventure Parks' - zip lines, etc.

If you want a nice apartment at a farm just outside Salzburg (on the light rail line), look at http://www.neuwirtgut.at/

Hi Jane,

I like the idea of Munich and Salzburg, but include the Salzkammergut and the Berchtesgaden area also. Both are very easy and close to Salzburg. In addition to Hohenwerfen, "Mad" King Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee Palace is right between Munich and Salzburg. Just outside of Berchtesgaden ( a few minutes), add the Jennerbahn cable car and the Konigsee boat trip. Get to St. Gilgen, maybe an hour from Salzburg, and take a lake ship on the Wolfgangsee, with stops at Strobl and St. Wolfgang, etc.
