Germany in September/October

I am taking a trip with my dad to Germany. Not sure where to go. We are thinking of sticking to west and south. Definitely want to do Mosel & Rhine. I'm assuming Munich. Not sure after that. Want authentic Germany, not real large cities except for Munich. Castles, beauty, etc. Any information would help. So much to see. We will have 2 weeks and would like to stick to trains for convenience. Thank you!!!!

Focus on the river valleys.

Neckar River Valley:
Bad Wimpfen
Besigheim
Esslingen
Tübingen
Rottweil

Main River Valley:
Miltenberg
Veitshöchheim
Würzburg
Sommerhausen
Ochsenfurt
Marktbreit
Bamberg

Altmühl River Valley:
Eichstätt
Pappenheim
Weißenburg (near Treuchtlingen on a tributary)

All these places have rail stations except Sommerhausen (but you can probably walk from the Winterhausen station.)

Consider taking the Romantic Road from Wurzburg to Garmisch.

The first visitors were friends and families of the American soldiers stationed in the large bases in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg but the idea of the trail from Würzburg to Füssen soon became wildly popular.

It's not too hard to see the reason for the popularity - despite the modern roots of the idea, the tour combines the historic cities of Würzburg and Augsburg with the three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, and then finishes off with the tourist highlights of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Alps.

Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen are medieval walled towns that are well preserved. Donauwörth is another town worth visiting. Nördlingen, however, is far less crowded than the other two and offers an additional attraction of geological interest - being located in the crater of a meteorite impact and with its impressive tower being built of the rock formed from that impact.
