Germany in Oct Advice on itinerary

We are flying into Frankfurt on Sun morning Oct 1 with 7 days to explore before joining a Danube cruise in Regensburg. I asked advice earlier and changed our itinerary based on that advice. Thank you! Would like opinions on what I have now. I am packing a lot into a few days. Last year we did a Rhine cruise and loved it but I’m mostly skipping that area this time. This year, we want to visit the town my family is from, Onsbach, with Baden-Baden as the closest large town where I could use free hotel nights for our stay. We also want to visit Bad Kissingen where my husband was stationed. We are interested in all history (historic sites, museums, castles and palaces), scenery and the real German beer experience. We are quick tourists, not much into shopping or touristy stores. I love hikes but not my husband so anything worth hiking to has to be relatively short and safe for me to go alone. For instance, last year in the Black Forest, he waited for me while I hiked up to a waterfall.

Sun Oct 1 - Tues Oct 3
Train from Frankfurt to Baden-Baden, Staying in Baden-Baden. Picking up rental car for Mon-Weds.
Mon exploring Onsbach and family roots. Anything else close that we shouldn’t miss?
Tues driving to Bad Kissingen. I was trying to use only trains but the trip from Baden-Baden to Bad Kissingen is long with lots of connections and expensive. Chose to rent a car and use this day to see Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenburg reasonably on the way. Are there other sights to see along this route or instead of Dinkelsbuhl?
Tues night staying in Bad Kissingen although I’m having trouble getting hotels to respond.
Weds Bad Kissingen in morning then leaving car in Wurzburg and traveling by train, ending up in Munich Weds night. Debating between Nuremberg or Augsburg for a stop.
Weds-Sat staying in Munich
Thurs I’m leaving open for exploring Munich or taking a day trip by train somewhere you suggest. Keeping the ability to swap Thurs Fri for weather.
Fri train to Garmisch and Mittenwald for Alps. I’m only seeing a bus between the two. Am I missing the train route? If I have to bus from G-P to Mittenwald, is there somewhere else I should go from Mittenwald to end up back in Munich rather than returning to G-P for the train back?
Sat morning open to see more around Munich or head to Regensburg early. Need to be in Regensburg by 4 pm for cruise.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I believe there is only a bus between Garmisch and Mittenwald, but it's not that long -only 31 minutes? I could be wrong, and it seems like there was one before but I'm not finding one now on the DB site. Someone else here may know and will chime in. :)

I would stick with Dinkelsbuhl rather than someplace else. I have not been there but it's been on my list for forever, and next time I will definitely visit there. I have heard nothing about good things about how charming a place it is.

ETA: I can't help you with Bad Kissingen, but I would suggest patience with the hotels. They are very busy right now. Have you tried booking online at their websites? Almost every hotel I've stayed at in Germany, with a few exceptions, allow people to book their rooms online. I would suggest going to Google maps, doing a search for Bad Kissingen, and the searching "nearby" for hotels. You can also try booking.com to search for hotels. In either case, don't book with booking.com or any other 3rd party booking agency unless there is no other way.

Thank you Mardee. The website for the hotel I want in BK let me choose the room I want with a range of rates, and I submitted my name and dates. It seemed to work. But it never gave me the actual rate for my selection and never asked for payment. I’ve tried emailing the hotel several times but have never gotten a response. It’s been several weeks. So I don’t know if I reserved a room!

If you haven't gotten a confirmation from the hotel (did you check your spam?), then you do not have a room. Have you tried calling the hotel? It's not difficult - just make sure you enter the country first, and call during Germany's business hours. Right now Germany is 6 hours ahead of Eastern time.

Sometimes hotels are slow to respond to emails but will pick up when you call them.

Be aware that Tuesday, October 3rd is the German national holiday. That means you will want to look and see what is open. Normal stores like grocery stores and such will not be. Just do your homework thoroughly.
