Germany in March

I know it is off season, but just want to make sure there is still plenty to do in March along the Rhine. Castles and town sites still open? Wine tastings?

"Castles and town sites still open?"

In March, the towns are still dead, for the most part. Many castles, shops and museums are closed until Easter, when the Dutch and British visitors typically start showing up. It's cold too.

Marksburg Castle is open year-round for tours. It might be the only one.

None of this means you can't pay the area a visit. The handsome old-world towns are still handsome and worth a walk-through, and the scenery, while it's not springtime yet, is starkly appealing despite its overall "brownness." Hiking is possible if the ground isn't too saturated. Here's a hiking trail near Burg Rheinstein (Trechtingshausen.)

But you should probably not plan on spending a whole lot of time there, and you should probably plan to base yourself in a city like Mainz if you wish to visit the Rhine towns for a day or two - Mainz would provide for easy access by train AND provide some sightseeing options (museums, churches, etc.) Mainz is a good base town for other destinations too.

Should have added we will be on a river cruise so won't be hopping towns but do want to use our free time effectively.

"...we will be on a river cruise..."

You need to share the Rhine towns you will dock in if you would like some suggestions for doing your own outings. They will probably be easy to do, but I have no clue where you'll be starting from.
