What you saw there last month. It has been hotter than what any "long term average" might tell you and much hotter on average than when we lived there. According to Weather.com Nuremberg for the next ten days for example it is predicted to see a range of lows in the sixties at night and highs in the low nineties during the day. Accuweather.com suggests a similar range in June. There won't be long stretches in the 90's... But France this summer has had a lot of near 100 degree weather.
We lived in Augsburg, Germany for four years and June was usually a rather pleasant month.
Still, it can get hot.
Geovagriffith, you lived in Germany 40 years ago. The weather here is rather different than 40 years ago. I know, because that is how long I have lived here. Summers are more extreme, a lot more extreme. The stores are sold out of every kind of fan and mobile AC and this is not the 1st year I have seen this happen. Several years ago, I worked outside in 41° weather. That is almost 106 F. This was pretty extreme but Germany hit more high temp records this past June.
While the previous posters are somewhat correct (the second half of June was very hot, with records over 105F) the first half was also colder than average, with several daily highs below 65F. So prepare for anything mentally and check as close to your departure as possible…
Look for the higher elevations the last weeks south. Thunderstorms and sometimes half day rain though in the Alps. You might consider going into Austria. If you are traveling by car you have many options The best places will be booked, so you have to make some choices and hope for better weather. Take a sweater and a rain jacket. Short and long pants. Sunscreen and sun/rain hat. It will be great regardless. Some places have fires on the mountains during the Summer Solstice. A great thing to see.
Germany is a large country - note that temperatures can differ quite a lot from north to south. I'm sitting up north where the forecast for most of the week is currently ten degrees cooler than Ms Jo in Frankfurt.
(We had the heat wave, but it hasn't stayed warm since then, and nothing is forecast above 30C for the next ten days. The weekend weather was actually fairly cool and damp. I was down in Hessen / RP in a t-shirt and shorts and needed to dig out warmer clothes when I got back.)
We visited Germany last JULY and it was very pleasant. Yes, we lived in Germany from 87-91 and I have read that currently there are more days of high heat, but compared to the temps we have where I now live (South Georgia), German weather is cooler than what we have.

We have visited Europe almost every year since 2010 when I retired. We have never had to suffer from very hot weather. I know this doesn't mean it can't happen, but when planning a trip months in advance, you can't predict exactly what will happen in advance.
We arrived in Germany (the Rhine region) in late June during the heatwave (100+), and between that and jetlag, we felt miserable and ill for several days. Next time we travel in the summer, the first place we stay will have AC. One physical hurdle at a time for us! :)
From the NYTimes today: "Western Europe Had Its Hottest June on Record. An unusually early heat wave smashed records across France, Britain and Spain. Temperatures in some areas are starting to soar again."
Stifling 95F+ in Oberpfalz 25-26 June, then vacation in Gramais, AT and mid 50-60F 1 July and half day rain. Prices for small mobile room air conditioners have quadrupled, with delivery in Fall.
We were in Germany the last two weeks, and it was consistently in the 80s, after hitting 105 in Prague where we started. Even without a heat wave, I'd definitely plan for hot weather. We brought hydration salts, and I'd suggest either that or drinking gatorade - water was not enough. Our feet swelled, due to the heat and also so much walking. We focussed on being out and about in the early morning or evening (but even then it was hot) so your sightseeing plans should include being inside museums, etc during the middle of the day. I brought floaty dresses and shorts and wore a ton of sunscreen, as well as a good hat. We had a wonderful time and I'm sure you will too.
