Initially I have got plan to go to Germany in Dec 2018, but due to last min work , we couldnt get away. If I defer the plan and go in June. Weather will be different. Any advise if we should still go in June? As we never been there before. We love to shop , sightseeing and good food.
I would advise June over December. Better weather, longer days. More places open. You can sit outside to eat. And you don't need thick coats (or any coats). Coming from Singapore you would find Germany in December a very cold shock.
Only negative is you are missing the Christmas Markets.
"plan to go to Germany in Dec 2018, but due to last min work," - its only September, hardly a "last minute" problem ☺
Edit: Coming from Singapore you might also not realise the days in Europe are shorter in December and longer in June.
Munich, 21st June: sunrise 05:13, sunset 21:17, length of day: 16 hours 4 minutes
21st December: sunrise 08:01, sunset 16:22, length of day 8 hours 21 minutes
GO!!!! June will definitely be better weather BUT crowds will be bigger. Follow the RS advice and get tickets online for the most popular attractions ASAP and have fun
"shop , sightseeing and good food" - these are all season interests. So, June is fine but can become really warm. This year we had days with 32c already in May, even Oslo in Norway had 30c.
For your interests Berlin, Hamburg and Munich are good candidates. In Berlin end of May is traditionally festival of cultures which is one of the largest and most manifold street food areas you have ever seen. All cultures living in Berlin show their traditions (clothing, music, dance, art, ...) and also offer their specific food. Berlin has a lower price level compared to Munich and Hamburg.
And even if the days are longer in June, it is famous from an 80s song that nights in Kreuzberg can be long as well. In the meantime you can add other neighborhoods as well.
Is there a particular date that they hold this event?(Berlin end of May is traditionally festival of cultures which is one of the largest and most manifold street food areas)
How about shopping?(Fashion)
It is not the same date every year. This year it was pentecost weekend. Date for 2019 is open. If they choose pentecost again it would be June 9 2019.

Which city in Germany is good for shopping?
Do you mean shopping for German traditional clothes (Tracht) or modern suits etc.?
Berlin, Hamburg, Munich but also Cologne, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart or Frankfurt / Main. Berlin and Cologne have the lowest averge income level.
Berlin is special with KaDeWe, Kurfürstendamm Boulevard and a few hundred specialised shops (Fachgeschäfte). Furthermore it offers some special shopping quarters and a lot of week and flea markets. https://www.berlin.de/en/shopping/
Hamburg: https://www.hamburg.com/shopping/
Munich: https://www.muenchen.de/int/en/shopping/shopping-guide.html
Thank you Markk. Your info is what I looking for.
I have never been to Germany. I am thinking of flying in to Munich from Singapore. And I have only 7 days to explore Germany after minus the travel time. Any advise that how I should make use of the 7 days?
3 choices , staying in just the one location - Middle Rhine valley ( fly in/out Frankfurt), Berlin, or Munich
Teo:
I visited Berlin this past May and it was wonderful. To get to Berlin's TXL Airport, I decided to go through Munich.
I wrote a six-part Trip Report which I posted on Rick Steve's forums.
Since you mention shopping, I totally agree with MarkK and his suggestion of KaDeWe. That was such a wonderful store to visit and so unique to Germany. When in this store, I took videos of their deli department and videos of their candy department. It is a seven-story department store.
Also, MarkK is correct about Kurfurstendamm, a major avenue/boulevard that you can walk along and shop. It is directly outside of KaDeWe. I walked about a mile on it and started to run out of steam, but realized if I continued to walk I would have been in the area of haute couture shops; i.e., Channel, Gucci, Coach, etc. (the very expensive ones). Also in this area, are tons of side streets with little shops that I wish I had more time to shop at.
Look for my trip report because you would be so close to visiting Potsdam, and it would be great for you to take an overnight or two-night trip to Dresden...beautiful architecture, art, cathedrals, museums, etc.
For my return home, I also went back through Munich (no days in Munich -- just a stopover at the airport to catch connecting flight).
Hope this helps.
As for sightseeing, you would love the Charlottenburg Palace, German History Museum, and a tour of the Reichstag (a beautiful building with very informative tour).
I need advise on whether to take a train or flight from Munich to Berlin? Plan to explore some days in Munich before heading to Berlin.
Train or plane
Price
Need to go Berlin to and fro cos I need to go back to Munich by end of the day to catch flight back home.
I recommend
- 2 days Munich,
- direct ICE train (www.bahn.com) to Bamberg (appr. 2 hrs.) and enter hotel address when you buy the ticket online
- 1 day Bamberg: explore wonderful old town 1/2 - 1 day)
- direct ICE train (www.bahn.com) to "Berlin Hbf" (main station) and enter hotel address when you buy the ticket online to have local transport included at moment of arrival
- Rest of days Berlin and stay around Tauentzienstrasse (street that KaDeWe is located at and prolongation of Kurfürstandamm). A lot of good hotels in all price levels there. Tip for people searching little qietness is Steigenberger at Los-Angeles-Platz.
Also close Bikini mall is worth a visit for designer fashion (also from local designers).
As Berlin beginner I would start with a HoHo to see the town and get explanations what is what. Here example for red buses but we have two more companies offering various tours. At sunny weather you may consider also a river Spree tour.
https://www.redbuses.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Map_2017_Berlin.pdf
In the evening mandatory street food experience is a Currywurst at Bier's Mini 7, a mini branch of famous Ku-Damm 195 (the Currywurst reference of old West Berln): https://goo.gl/maps/j5NfgPoZNx72 I met the owner recently after not seeing 20 years or so and we started laughing how old we looked :-)
You will not need a car at all. Munich and Berlin have excellent public transport.
Munich: https://www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/index.html
Berlin: https://www.bvg.de/en/Welcome
Hope that helps you.
Thank for the info, will read more about it and start planning the itinerary. Looking forward .
Going over to Germany in June, as regards to time of the year, is much better than in Dec especially if it's Berlin. I usually go in May and June, on recent trips, that is. If you're interested in Prussian-Germany history, historic Berlin is east of the Brandenburg Gate....all depends on the level of your historical interest.
From Munich to Berlin...you have 3 options open...flying, or the day ICE train, or the night train, which goes Munich to Hannover, arriving a bit after 0600, then change to Berlin.
There used to be a direct night train from Munich to Berlin, (ended in Dec 2015), instead, now, you transfer in Hannover or Hamburg, the distance to Berlin is almost the same. That night train Munich to Hannover has its terminus in Hamburg.
If you don't prefer flying, then you have the two train options...day or night.
Addition to Fred: Of course you can take also bus and night bus, e.g. operated by Flixbus.
With improved ICE times I would not recommend flying to travel between Munich (center) and Berlin. Different discussion when you are already at the Munich airport, e.g. landed from international flight.
Yes, true, there is bus option.
A real pity that the direct connection by night train between Munich and Berlin was abolished. Transferring in Hannover isn't bad since you arrive at or shortly after 0600 when all the eateries (good choices at Hannover Hbf) are already open, ie, time for breakfast, before continuing on to Berlin.
I am somehow confused about the train from Munich to Berlin. My understanding is there is no direct train to Berlin. So I need to alight at somewhere? (Hannover or Hamburg ) And then buy ticket to head to Berlin? Or is it a stopover and I k board the train again to Berlin?
How many hours does it take for the high speed train from Munich to Berlin?
Please advise me as I nvr been there before.
I plan to fly in to Munich and stay in Munich before travel to Berlin.
Places that I am keen in Munich. Please advise me on which I should head for. And how I should go about planning. As my planning is not so good. Which day tour is more worth to join? Impossible to join all day tour. Just spend 3 days in Munich.
1. Marienplatz
2. Salzburg ( join small group tour?)
3. Konigssee
4. Romantic road, Rothenburg, and Harburg Day tour
( Rothenburg-on-der-Tauber)
5. Markets- Munich’s Viktualienmarkt
6. Ingolstadt village shopping ( Otto-Hahn- StraBe, 85055 Ingolstadt, Germany
7. Neuschwanstein castle day trip
8. Fc Bayern Munchen Football and Allianz arena tour
Can some more recommend me which hotel to stay in Munich? Safe and cheap! Than you.
There is a direct ICE train between Munich and Berlin (I guess 6 connections per day). No change of train necessary. Just look up. www.bahn.com from "München Hbf" to "Berlin Hbf".
If you have concrete start and end address of journey use this. Then the ticket price can incluse the local transport - so you do not have to take care of this at this journey.
I am somehow confused about the train from Munich to Berlin. My understanding is there is no direct train to Berlin.
Please look up www.bahn.com and you will see that there are 16 direct trains from Munich to Berlin per day. Five of them (in 2019, presently three) have few stops and do the trip in just under four hours, the rest takes 4:30 (and a few routed via Augsburg 5+ - I'd avoid those). Book as soon as your travel date is set; walk up prices are high.
Any recommendations for day tour in Berlin? Which hotel is near kadewe and train station?
There are a number of hotels near KaDeWe. It's close to Tauentzienstrasse, can't suggest any.
The closest train station to KaDeWe is Bahnhof Zoo.
The S-Bahn goes from Bahnhof Zoo to Berlin Hbf (central station), 3 stops after Bahnhof Zoo, ie, between Zoo and Berlin Hbf are the stops "Bellevue" and "Tiergarten" .
Look for S-Bahn subway trains with the terminus "Ahrensfelde" or lines stopping at Alexanderplatz, Ostkreuz, You're going east. If a subway line stops at Alexanderplatz and Berlin Ostbahnhof, it also stops at Berlin Hbf.
Mittendrin is a wonderful 4-room "boutique hotel" (I'd call it a bed and breakfast) that is 2 blocks from KaDeWe. The hostess is delightful and creates an amazing breakfast every morning. There are 3 U stations within 2-3 blocks of mittendrin, and the Zoo station (S and U) is an easy 10 minute walk. There are many other hotels in the area.
