Germany Hub

We are going to Germany and want to visit the town my mother was born. It is Meiningan about 2 hours east pf Frankfurt. We would like to go to 2 or 3 other amazing places in Germany between Frankfurt, Nueromburg and Munich, and would love your recommendations on how long to stay in these places. we would then go on our way to Salzburg. We thought about using Nueromburg or Munich as a Hub and the take trains to little towns. What do you guys think of that idea. this trip can be 5 days or one week, we will be heading to Austria and then to Sardinia. for the rest of our trip. we are flexible on dates but mostly want to be there end of August and back in the USA by Sept 15-17.

I can't understand what you're asking for here. Can you restate more precisely what you are looking for?

What airport are you landing at?

Have you decided to visit the 4 cities you've already named in your post? If so, I think you already have plenty on your plate for 5-7 days.

You can spell the N-city either in English or in German, but not the way you have it now...

E: Nuremberg
G: Nuernberg or Nürnberg

Nuremberg is a good base town for visiting other places on day trips. But Frankfurt and Meiningen are not good day trip destinations from there.

Erfurt is the closest larger city, and worth visiting. Also nearby, Weimar (the City of Culture), Eisenach, which is the hometown of J.S. Bach and the Wartburg Castle.

It’s hard to know how long to recommend I. Places because we do not know what your interests are. Can you tell us what you are interested in? Art? Architecture? History? What draws you to name these places? Do you want to hike? Beer halls?

Using a city as a hub can work well if it is a small or medium city. Using a large city like Munich is not as great, since your lodging costs will be more in a large city and if you rent a car parking can be a problem.

If you want to visit Salzburg, then it is best to stay there or in nearby Berchtesgaden.

Nuremburg would not be a bad place to use as a hub, but then staying in other places is great as well.

Consider doing The Romantic Road, you will travel through some wonderful Medieval walled towns like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, as well as great medium sized historic cities like Augsburg and Wurzburg.

Since Meiningen is in Thuringia, use Erfurt as a hub.
