Germany Hohenschwangau to Oberammergau

Hello, we are planning to stay in Hohenschwangau for 2 nights seeing the castles there & relaxing. Can we are traveling by train/bus. My question is can we take a bus to see Linderhof castle & then go on from there by bus to spend 1 night in Oberammergau before taking train from there to Salzburg for 4 nights?

The bus from Hohenschwangau goes to Oberammergau 3 times a day, where you change to a bus to Schloss Linderhof. So it might be best to take the morning bus to Oberammergau, leave bags at your hotel there. The bus from Oberammergau to Schloss Linderhof is about every hour and takes 30 minutes and return buses about every 1 1/2 hours.

Oberammergau to Salzburg takes about 4 hours and requires a return to Munich, but you can use a Bayern Ticket for 31 EUR for 2, leaving after 9 am weekdays.

RVO bus line 9606 runs from Füssen to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with stops in Hohenschwangau and Oberammergau. There is often a change of buses at Echelsbacher Brücke. Here is the schedule. The bus leaving Hohenschwangau at 8:13 only changes number (from 73 to 9606) at Echsbacher Brücke; the actual bus stays the same.

Here is the schedule for RVO 9622, which goes from Oberammergau to Linderhof.

You can also find schedules in a little easier-to-read format on the Bahn query webpage.

In Oberammergau, I would suggest you stay here, at Gästehaus Paula Richter. It's close to the rail/bus station, economical, and Frau Richter speaks good English.

Thank you for your replies which have helped a lot. We are traveling there 9/12. We will have German flexi rail pass, does it happen to cover any of these buses? If so, does using the bus 1 day count as 1 of our rail pass days?

I don't believe the German Rail Pass covers local and regional buses, only certain long distance international buses operated by Deutsche Bahn. That is the bad news. The good news is that these buses are pretty cheap and in my experience, you can buy tickets from the driver.

No, but who uses rail passes anymore? Ops, the OP? Well. if you haven't already bought a pass, reconsider. I've made 10 trips (22 weeks) in 18 years in Germany/Europe since I last bought a rail pass.

Regional tickets, such as the Bayern-Ticket, do cover most local and regional buses. In Bavaria, the Bayern-Ticket covers the extensive RVO bus network except for buses that go out of Bavaria (like RVO 840 from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, only the German part), on toll roads, or special buses (like the mountain buses up to the Eagles' Nest).

Hint: use a rail pass only for long days of travel (or use Sparpreis-Tickets). For shorter travel inside an individual Land (state), use Länder-Tickets.
