Germany family trip next summer

Hi !
first post here, and i'm looking to get some answer to my multiples questions ! First heres' our situation:
- Family of four (2 adults kids 4 and 8)
- leaving From Montreal Canada
- 21-25 days trip between july 10 and august 20 (thos dantes can't be change)
- Budget around 240 Euro/day (excluding flight cost)

1) for flight we have two options : fly to Munich or fly to Frankfurt. They are the only two cities with a direct connection with Montreal. We want to leave Montreal and get a direct flight, for the return we can live with a layover. What would be the best place to flight ?

2) thorn between car or train or both !

3) Quick itiniary (based on a flight to Munich):

4-5 days Munich (day trip to Salzburg, Neuchwanstein)
Train To Nuremberg maybe rent a car and 5-6 days in that region, drop the car to Dresden
2-3 days Dresden (day trip ? )
5-6 days Berlin (any ideas of day trip ?)
Train back to munich and leave Munich next morning

Like you can see this plan exclude all the western part of Germany, Should I plan something else to include place like Baden Baden and Köln ?

4) We are looking for a mix of cities, small places, mountain, architecture, history and fun for kids.

It's gona be enough for now I think !

Thanks in advance !

With young children it is nice to have a car, but Germany has such good train and bus systems you could try it without. The group all you can ride day train passes for each state (länder tickets) are really cheap.

Traveling up the eastern edge of Germany has a lot to see, so no need to head over to the west.

I would try to return home from Berlin rather than backtrack to Munich.
