I'm looking for some help with an upcoming itinerary. We will be flying in to Munich in mid may. At the end of just shy of 2 weeks we will need to end up in Vienna where we are flying out of. We wanted to include Salzburg, but are pretty open to anything else. We planned on Munich for 3-4 days and Vienna 2-3 days. Originally we were interested in lindau, with light excursions around the Bodensee. Recently though, I've been looking north of Munich. Any help or direction would be appreciated.
john what kinds of things are you interested in? Mountain scenery, history & architecture, art & museums, food and beer, off the beaten path? Been there before? It makes a difference in what might get recommended.
I'm of the school that believes fewer destinations makes for a more pleasurable experience, in which case Munich-Salzburg-Vienna is already a full agenda. "Just shy of two weeks" tells me that you only have time for one more stop based on what you've already planned. But you might be more active and wanting to cover a lot more on your hit list if you have specific interests. You should look at your itinerary based on the nights in each location (not days) as you will be eating up a lot of those daytime hours in transportation and logistics between locations.
How are you traveling? Remaining in Bavaria or Germany all?
Thank you for the quick responses. We have been to Vienna previously and were more making that a follow up/shorter portion. We wanted to add a smaller town or village in instead of just the cities. We enjoy all the things you listed and that's what creates this great problem we have. We have so many great options.
john. Here's my opinion.* You might be attracted to Nuremberg or Regensburg for their history and architecture, culture, etc. To me, they're similar, and not much different than Munich itself, i.e., a large historic German city. If you're thinking of Rothenburg, its very nice, but not worth going that far just for it. I think Lindau is lovely. So is Bercthesgaden, Garmisch and Halstatt. I have never been, but if it were me, I'd consider the Appenzell region of Switzerland. Much of this is well-covered in the RS guidebooks to the areas, so its not much original thinking on my part. May can still be cold in the mountains, if that matters. Lets see what others have to say.

A few Bavarian suggestions to the north...
Bad Windsheim - Open Land Museum, Brauhaus Döbler
Iphofen (walled art and wine town, see photos)
Sommerhausen (south of Würzburg, see photos)
Marktbreit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLUgpoQIFHI
Pappenheim - TI office info
Bayreuth - Maisel's Brewery
Munich is a great place to start out, with great museums, palaces and of course, beer halls. It's a 4 day stop for me.
Then rent a car and stop out at Dachau before you head southwest toward Fuessen and King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein. Then drop south into the Western Tirol and enjoy the Austrian Alps--heading west toward Innsbruck. We love getting up on the mountain and rambling from village to village.
Innsbruck to Salzburg is an easy drive. I'd suggest you drop the car off at the nearest rental car lot near German border and catch the bus into Salzburg. Then take a train over to Vienna when you're ready.
You could also stop at Linz or take in the Mautenhausen concentration camp.
Vienna remains one of our favorite European cities--music, art and the Hapsburg's palaces. It's another 4 day stop.
I also recommend Linz, interesting as a province capital, interesting historical sites and monuments/memorials, spent a week-end there in May of this year.
John - You've gotten a lot of good suggestions; below in bold are the correct spellings for some of them, should you decide to look them up.
Mautenhausen = Mauthausen
Halstatt = Hallstatt
Bercthesgaden = Berchtesgaden
