Heading to Germany and hopefully Austria (via Munich) with 3 boys (10, 12, 14) in August. We would like to see small charming towns and hike and maybe swim. We think Airbnb would be best for the majority of the trip and are thinking of Munich for a few nights and then 2 or 3 more stops/stays for a few nights each. Would anyone have suggestions on towns/areas to stay in and itinerary items not to miss?
I have pasted below information regarding hiking from a prior post. You may want to consider hiking to a hut (lodge). Many of the popular towns and outdoor hubs in Austria feel more like a tourist resort than the charming village you might want. I assume you will have a rental car. In that case, you can stay in an Airbnb off the beaten path in a local community that is scenic but not a resort destination. Or, there are many gasthofs on the mountain sides in less-trafficked areas. Almgasthof Himmelbauer (https://www.almgasthof-himmelbauer.at/compdetail.php?hid=521&us=1&tplid=9&lang=de&cook_land=1) up a narrow, winding road is one example but there are hundreds of others. For hikes, use the tyrol.com link below to find a hut to hike to in each area you want to visit.
"Hut hikes are Great! These links will take you to websites with information about many huts and hut to hut hikes generally. The hikes range from mild to very demanding. I'm certain there are many others. Sometimes they list hikes of several days but you can usually just choose a section that fits your schedule. In late May, you may want to avoid the highest elevations. If you're near the Zugspitze, you can go to the Austrian town of Ehrwald and take the Ehrwalder Almbahn (a ski tram) up and hike to the Coburger hut. It's an easier hike and just one night but a pretty hike to a hut set between two high mountain lakes with a view of the Zugspitze. For May, someone recommended to me the Three Lake Tour in the Schlierseer Alps. I understand that it is a lower elevation.

Three Lakes Route (check for other information on this at Bergfex or similar websites): https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/long-distance-hiking/bavarian-prealps/the-three-lakes-tour-a-leisurely-hut-hike-in-the-schliersee-mountains/16582506/
For swimming in a beautiful lake, try the Weissensee in Austria. Oberfranken (Uppper Franconia) in Germany is full of charming villages such as Sesslach (restored medieval village with little tourist traffic) and Coburg (historic town with massive medieval fortress and charming town square, etc. - also with limited tourist traffic).
Will you have a car?

Buching-Schwangau-Lech Waterfall-Reutte Austria-Lake Plansee-Linderhof Palace-Ettal Monastery-Oberammergau -Wieskirche-Back to Buching Scenic drive with lot to see and stop on the way
People swim in the Schwansee by Füssen too. The walk around the lake gives you some nice distant views of the two castles too. If you have transportation and are looking for a relatively easy walk (12-13ks total) with few tourists in Austria, look at from Hinterhornbach to the Petersberg-Alm (https://www.petersbergalm.at/) and back. Hinterhornbach is about 45k drive from Füssen. https://www.landgasthof-adler.at/live/
If you find yourself in Garmish/Partenkirchen I would encourage you to go the Partnach Gorge. As you walk to it you pass the winter Olympic ski jump area. I raised three boys (now 41, 39 & 37) so I still look at things and think “the boys would love this”. Lots of good hikes in the area too. We were there in December.
Years ago, when living in Germany I did a great two day hike up to the top of the Zugspitze. Stayed in Garmisch. It was with a guide and we stayed in a hutte overnight. Did it twice and loved it.
Thank you all so very much for your tips!
I am researching all of them!
