Greetings all, I am new to this forum and have never travelled to Europe, so hoping you may be of some help. My husband and I may have the opportunity to race in the Challenge Roth triathlon on July 12. After this we will have approximately 8-9 days to tour. Options include Amsterdam, Paris, Switzerland, or a combination of a few of these. Currently our plan is to fly into Nuremberg. We have secured accommodation in Schwabach during the race, and will need to rent a car to get to and from Roth with a bike in tow.
The trouble with post race touring is that we will have a very expensive race bike (in a bike case) that we will need to cart around with us, as well as the usual luggage. Knowing that....how difficult is it to use the train system between countries with that much baggage? How does the luggage system work on the trains? Is it similar to planes where it would be in a separate compartment and secure? Or would it be better to keep the rental car for touring instead? During my initial research it looks like car rental may be cheaper than trains, but trains would mean we could both enjoy the sights without worrying about driving in a strange country. Or, does anyone know of a secure place that the bike could be stored in Nuremburg while we tour? This bike costs as much as some cars, so we are somewhat reluctant to leave it anywhere. Has anyone used the "left luggage" storage option used at airports? Would this be secure or would there be alot of staff/travellers coming and going?
Thanks for any and all insights/suggestions!
