Germany and Berner Oberland

Hi,

My three sisters and I will be traveling to Germany for the first time (first time overseas) in September for 10 days. We have a tentative itinerary.

I was hoping for some advice are we trying to do to much? would you recommend anything different? Also our flight from the USA has a 24 hour layover in Iceland so we will be spending a day there prior to getting to Frankfort.

Our base will be in Limburgerhof (near Frankfort) at a family members home.

Arrive Sunday afternoon in Frankfort spend Sunday and Monday near Limburgerhof possibly take the train to Heidelberg visit castles and wineries

Tuesday drive to the Mosel River Valley - we would like to rent bikes and/or do the river ferry
Tuesday night drive to the Rhine River area and stay the night in a castle we are thinking of staying at the Schoenburg Castle
Wednesday explore the Rhine River area on one of the River boats
Wednesday evening drive back to Limburgerhof
Thursday leave early and drive towards the Berner Oberland area, we thought we would take our time and stop in Baden Baden or other places that look nice
Thursday and Friday stay in Murren
Saturday head back to Limburgerhof possibly by way of Lake Constance maybe spend the night
Sunday head back to Limburgerhof
Monday heading to Munich staying for two nights
Wednesday back to Limburgerhof
Thursday head back home

We want to see as much of the area as we can. I would appreciate any advice or recommendations there will be 4 of us.

You say that Limburgerhof is near Frankfurt. It really isn't, it is close to Mannheim, Speyer and the Deutsches Weinstrasse. There is a ton of things to do right around there. If you need a list just ask....

It is a fair way to the Mosel from there and the area Rick speaks about on the Rhine. The most beautiful part of the Rhine can be done quite quickly by boat and train and it is not hard to visit a few places on the Mosel at the same time. Whilst it would be a bit busier than two day trips from Limburgerhof it would save all the driving back and forth on the second day.

karenschumacher62, I think your trying to cover too much ground in just 9 days on the ground. Unless you want to spend most of your time in a car on a freeway, I'd suggest you cut back. Think of it as losing at least one half to one whole day in travel and logistics when you move from one place to another. Once you start making stops at interesting places, your day is done. Maybe consider the train, at least for the Swiss part, as you can't drive a car to Mürren anyway. Make sure to spell it Frankfurt when looking at airfares or rail.

Yeah, it's important to realize that you have packed over 20 hours of driving into that itinerary.

And, you get only one full day in Switzerland, with the drives from and back to Limburgerhof - especially if you try to fit in Baden-Baden and Konstanz. Similarly, you only have one day in Munich, with the two 4-hours Limburgerhof drives on either end.

I suggest you choose 2 out of (1) Mosel/Rhine area; (2) Switzerland; and (3) Bavaria.

If it were me and it was my first visit to Europe, I'd add more Switzerland. Leave Munich and Bavaria for another trip.

If it were me, I'd make a loop from Limburgerhof to Lautbrunnen Valley - see the Black Forest and Strasbourg/Colmar, France on the way down, and Luzern, Lake Konstanz, and the other side of the Black Forest region on the way back up.

Something like this:

Day 1 - arrive, get to Limburgerhof and adjust to jet lag with a neighborhood/town walk - sleep Limburgerhof
Day 2 - Day-trip to Heidelberg - sleep Limburgerhof
Day 3 - Rhine and Mosel Valleys, consider Burg Eltz - sleep in Bacharach or Cochem
Day 4 - Finish up Rhine/Mosel tour, back to Limburgerhof late. - sleep Limburgerhof
Day 5 - Limburgerhof - consider the day trips in this area, per Nigel's suggestion above. - sleep Limburgerhof
Day 6 - visit Strasbourg and Gegenbach (consider also Colmar) en route to Freiburg im Breisgau - sleep in Freiburg im Breisgau
Day 7 - Switzerland! Leave early and consider to spend a couple hours in Bern. - Sleep in Murren
Day 8 - Lauterbrunnen Valley - Sleep in Murren. You can keep the car in the carpark, you won't it or need it. - Sleep in Murren
Day 9 - Lauterbrunnen Valley to Luzern, en route to Lake Konstanz. Sleep in Konstanz
Day 10 - back to Limburgerhof, consider Wutach gorge, Triberg falls, other Black Forest villages. - Sleep in Limburgerhof
Day 11 - Limburgerhof - consider another day trip. - Sleep in Limburgerhof
Day 12 - back to Frankfurt for flight home

This would still be a fast-paced and fantastic road trip, but only 3 single-night stays, and none back-to-back, so as to maintain your travel energy. This is more important than first-timers give credit.
