I am making plans to see Austria from Munich so thought I would stay in a smaller place not so expensive
Is there a train from Munich to Füssen or Garmish.
There are trains to both Füssen and Garmisch from Munich. To "see Austria" could mean anything. From Garmisch it's a simple matter to cross the border into Austria and visit Innsbruck and a few other places. Here's a map of the train and bus lines in the region.
I'm pretty sure there are several trains a day. Just google "trains from Munich to Fussen" and "trains from Munich to Garmish" and you should get some good information to start researching. If you do stay in that area, don't overlook Oberammergau. Buses from Fussen or Garmish should be available.
Speaking of nice places to visit (or stay)... Mittenwald is on the rail line between Garmisch and Innsbruck.
We stayed at Alpenhotel Rieger in Mittenwald. The location was perfect, and the hotel reminded me of “staying at grandma’s” home. Excellent breakfast with lots of local items, too!
This was during a Germany/Austria trip: Munich, Mittenwald, Salzburg, St. Wolfgang, Melk, Vienna.
For do-it-yourself type information about train times and routes our host here has written a good page on how to do it, including how to go to DB - the German national train operator - at:- https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules
Just search for train connections on website of Deutsche Bahn.
Depending on where you want to go you can use Bayern Ticket, also to get to Salzburg.
Yeah, you might get a train to go to your destination. But if you are totally unaware and don't know what to do then Google is the best friend. Search there for a better solution.
"might" get a train?
Has some unpublicized disaster befallen the German train system, thekratomtimes? If so, I'm totally unaware of it.
If you actually googled how to get from Munich to Füssen then you know that "TRAIN" turns up in all the first-page results.
I think the first thing I would do is research the destinations I think I want to see and then determine the distance between Munich and those places by train and possibly car. Then I would look at what I want to accomplish in its area and whether its really feasible on a day trip.
That's the word what I wanted to say. Before going anywhere everyone should research. In this way you will get some good knowledge about the people, their manner and attitude.
"...whether its really feasible on a day trip" from Munich?
Perhaps I'm wrong - it's not 100% clear - but I don't think Pamela is now planning to stay in Munich or do a day trip from Munich. She wants to "stay in a smaller place" - and just wants to know whether after arriving in Munich she can get to a smaller place (like Füssen or Garmisch) by train - and do day trips from there.
The answer to that question is yes. Figure 2 hours to Füssen, 1.3 hrs. to Garmisch.
