i am renting a car. i would like to know what you recommend to do in Fussen, Oberammergau, Zugspitze, Mittenwald and Neuschwanstein castle. where should i sleep? i think that with 2 nights I can cover everything. Should i take the one day tour and do you have any suggestion what is better?

Oberammergau, the Zugspitz, and Mittenwald are all east of Fussen and fairly close to each other. I'd suggest either Mittenwald, Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or Ettal or Krun if you want really small towns, would be better than Fussen. You can easily use public transport from G-P to the Neuschwanstein.

If it isn't absolutely clear the day you plan to do the Zugspitze, do go. It clouds up easy and then you're just on the top of a mountain in the fog. Likewise, if you really want to walk out to the point you need to make sure it's open. The snow can linger and keep it closed into July.

There are buses from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Füssen and back that go through Oberammergau. From Oberammergau, you can make a one day trip to Neuschwanstein and Füssen and another trip to Zugspitze and Mittenwald. Spend your evenings seeing Oberammergau.

I'd stay here, in Oberammergau. A lot of people from the NATO center in Oberammergau stay there and, except for "sheeps", Frau Richter speaks excellent English.

It would make it a little difficult to include Oberammergau, but you could also stay in Pfronten-Steinach. Pfronten is a delightful place, a collection of thirteen villages on the German/Austrian border near Reutte that grew together. It's a popular resort for Germans but relatively unknown by Americans. I've stayed there three times for about a week, total, the last two times here.

It's a bus trip of a little over an hour via Füssen Bhf to the castles at Schwangau, and the bus is free with a guest card. It's a 1H20m trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Ausserfernbahn, a train line that goes through Austrian (Tyrol) but is run by the Bahn since it has no connections to Austrian Rail lines.
