Germany 24 December to 27 December … things to do on actual Christmas

hello, we will be in Germany December 17-30 flying in and out of Frankfurt. this trip we hope to spend time in Dresden, Nuremberg, and Rothenburg (we would like to see Christmas markets and my brother in law would like good war museums. I am trying to figure out what city to be in during the actual Christmas Day. Checking in Dec 23 or 24 checking out Dec 26 or 27 and heading back to Frankfurt for our departure … I know that many shops will be closed for the actual holiday but will there anything open? if not what city would be best just to enjoy walking around / family time? We were thinking about an air bob but I'm wondering if a hotel over the holiday would be better?? would we be better off renting a car or just doing the train? We will have 4 adults and a 1.5 year old….

anyone who has spent Christmas in Germany I would love some practical advise / reality on what to expect….
also anyone done Germany in December with a 1.5 year old? suggestions on what baby stuff to bring (stroller? backpack carrier? winter gear ect…)

Generally, you'd want to be in cities like Dresden and Nuremberg without a car. See if you can find saver fares at DB for Frankfurt > Dresden > Nuremberg and Rothenburg > Frankfurt. Nuremberg > Rothenburg is best accomplished by regional train on local group day tickets that you can buy from ticket machines at Nuremberg station.

Over the holidays you'll find little open except for eateries and convenience stores at the rail stations. Of the places you mention I'd want to be in Nuremberg, which is a great place for outings. Maybe you'd ride the train and take in some scenery on one of those inexpensive day tickets to somewhere like Bamberg, or Amberg, or Regensburg, and just amble around the handsome towns with some packed sandwiches in your day sack. Grab a coffee and a pastry at one of the stations.

Another option might be to travel on one of those dead days. You'll end up in Frankfurt, eventually... so to the south of Frankfurt is a city called Speyer, which has a Christmas market that stays open AFTER Christmas and also is home to the Technik Museum, which tradtionally stays OPEN 365 days per year. Might be a good choice for a couple of nights...
