Germany:10 days in March

Hello All, Our daughter is using her study abroad semester at ZU in Friedrichshafen. Her Easter break is 3/25 - 4/3, and she is hoping that we will fly over to visit. I have been trying to set up an itinerary that doesn't have us hopscotching all over the country, while giving us the best advantage to see and do as much as possible. Would love to have a "home base" so we don't have to tote our luggage around with us, plan on using public transportation. Please help; any advice will be much appreciated.

Some two years ago I based myself for some three or four nights in a village near Oberammergau to explore nearby attractions, combined with some good walks. It is indeed a good feeling to come back in the late afternoon at a familiar place. This area has a perfect bus system, and free for guests as well.
But I would strongly advise you not to stay in one place only. This part of Germany has so much to offer. Nürnberg is a good base for wonderful cities like Würzburg, Bamberg and Regensburg. All easily reached by train: www.bahn.de/p_en/view/index.shtml for schedules.

Thank you so much for the information as I had not even looked at these towns previously. And also for the link to the rail system! I just found a family church outside of Hamburg, so now I am also looking for connections there as well. Of course we would need a car to get to the little town where the church is, but we are working out the details. Thanks again for the ideas!
