Where to spend 2-3 nights after Danube cruise

Our Danube cruise ends in Vilshofen, Germany. We have 2-3 nights to kill. Any suggestions for where to go for these 3 nights that’s within a 2-3 hour train ride? Thank you.

Regensburg, Nuremberg, Munich. Are you flying home from Munich afterward, or going somewhere else?

I like Sam's suggestion - Regensburg, Germany's best-preserved medieval town. From Vilshofen the train ride takes 1.25 hours with a change of train in Plattling.

Alternatively, you might try LANDSHUT, another very handsome town.

Direct trains are available between Vilshofen and Landshut, and the trip takes roughly the same amount of time.

If you stay in Landshut, you can visit Regensburg (45 minutes away) or Munich (45 minutes away.)

If you stay in Regensburg, it's of course 45 minutes to Landshut. But Munich will be 1.5 - 2 hours away.

Landshut is also very convenient to MUC airport. Direct train, 35 minutes. Regensburg > MUC airport takes 1.3 hours.

Rick Steves doesn't cover these nice destinations; you can find additional information at Tripadvisor for both.

If you've been on the Donau (Danube) you probably came through Regensburg, if not, that's a good choice. Lundshut is also good. Even Passau is worth a stay. But an out of the ordinary place, a but longer train ride, is Burghausen, which is as Bavarian a place as you could ever want to find. Huge castle, excellent local museums, and an altstadt that's still original.

My assumption is that this is a Danube cruise that begins in Budapest and ends in Vilshofen, before you get to Regensburg. The other direction begins in Frankfurt, travels up the Main River and crosses over to the Danube on the Main-Danube Canal. That way would pass through Regensburg, as well as Nuremberg.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Regensburg and Landshut are looking good. Our concern is we land n Vilshofen on September 29th. Hoping these two towns are not crowded because of Oktoberfest. We will fly out of Munich on October 2nd.

Just make your reservations now. I like Restaurant-Café-Pension Himmel in Landshut, but might be already booked. It went from nothing to something.

Outside of central Munich, you won't notice anything. You can get a train direct to Munich airport from Regensburg without setting foot in Munich city. Direct trains every hour at 17 past the hour and takes 1 hour and 24 minutes. Same train stops at Landshut and then it is only a 36 minute train ride to the airport.
