Germans and Their Trains - A Love Story

BBC News (TV, The Travel Show) is running an episode on German trains this weekend.

Emeline Nsingi Nkosi explores the German rail network. She heads into Berlin's underground U-Bahn system to visit the disused war bunkers built inside its stations, attends the opening of a museum dedicated to Wuppertal's distinctive suspended monorail, and rides a makeshift narrow-gauge train that links the remote Hallig Islands to the mainland.

The Berlin U-Bahn (subway) network can also be explored by an open / convertible waggon - more info in German by subway network provider ad operator BVG.

And as a born Berliner I have to admit that I love this mean of transport. Nearly independent from every weather situation it runs reliably around the year. U station Hansaplatz was my home as kid. It took only 1:47 mins to station Zoologischer Garten - I really stopped it. Unbeatable by car.

Subway line U1 was inspiration for Linie 1, the second-most successful German musical. It was played for years at Grips Theater which is located near "my" U station Hansaplatz by the way.

When travelling, with limited time in the area, for me a visit to Wuppertal greatly exceeds any time you would spend in Köln.
