German Rail Pass information needed

Hello - we will be arriving in Germany and Austria planning on using public transportation for the trip. We are basing for a few days out of both Munich and Salzburg. We will be taking some day trips.
This site has recommended we look at the German Rail pass and potentially the Twin passes. We will be arriving in a week so I fear I have missed my window to purchase the pass that allows x number days travel over a period of a month since the card would be mailed to my american address and time is short. Is there a way to buy this pass and get the access via email or at a physical location in Europe? If not, we will be looking at buying the 7 or 10 day consecutive pass.
Can someone please provide me more information on how the pass works and how I go about scheduling individual trip segments? I have read through the site but being unfamiliar with European public transportation I am confused. How do i determine which trains are available to us etc? The other thing I have looked at is pricing individual segments for the trips we are taking since we are not traveling each day of this trip and will not need all the days in the consecutive day pass.

Please advise.

Someone who is really knowledgeable about German trains will no doubt show up in this thread before long, but from reading this forum I know that Germany has really excellent deals for regional tickets. You're not planning to cover a lot of ground, so I suspect you will save money by not buying a rail pass.

It will help other responders, though, if you list your planned day trips, to the extent that you know them.

I don't know the cost of a German Rail Pass, but with the Bayern Ticket the maximum price for a whole day with regional trains in Bavaria with the Bayern Ticket is EUR 32,00 for the two of you. I know the staff at German railway stations as very helpful. They will advise you about the cheapest tickets for your destination.
The above-mentioned rail planner of DB shows you the ticket prices on the different classes of trains (ICE, IC, RE etc.). You can also select »Change other data« and opt for »only local transport« to get the regional trains.

In addition to scythian's comments I'd like to point out that the Bayern Ticket is not only valid on trains but on public buses, trams, subways and streetcars within Munich and other places you might day trip to as well. The GR pass is not.

You really should go back to some of the threads you have started previously. You have already received some helpful information on the alternatives to the German Rail pass in those.

And if you want further detailed help, we need to know your daytrip destinations to provide it. For example - is Garmisch one of your destinations? For such a trip there is another day pass that covers Munich to Garmisch (among other routes) that is slightly cheaper than the Bayern ticket and can be used at ANY hour of the day.
